Tony Stewart To Retire In 2009?
08-13-2007 | Charlotte, NC
Are we seeing the last of Tony Stewart?
According to a source inside Joe Gibbs Racing, Stewart is on borrowed time and will retire from NASCAR Nextel Cup racing in 2009.
This isnt the first time its been reported that Stewart, who won the Cup race at Watkins Glen Sunday, is going to call it a career in NASCARs highest division. In fact, the volatile driver has on more than one occasion threatened to do so, but this latest scenario is the first one that seems to make sense.
The scenario even has a name Joey Logano.
According to the Gibbs source, Logano is being groomed to take over for Stewart in the No. 20 Gibbs car full-time in 2009. Logano is currently driving a JGR entry in the NASCAR Busch East division and Gibbs will have a Cup test development team dedicated specifically to him next season. Its expected that Logano will make his Cup debut next season and compete in a select number of events before running for Rookie of the Year in the 20 car in 2009.
That puts Stewart right where he professes that he wants to be free to run whatever dirt track race and an Indy 500 or two whenever he wants to.
