US Military: Airstrikes in Iraq Kill 32 ...(Iranian networks smuggling weapons and fighters)

BAGHDAD (AP) - A U.S.-led raid and airstrike targeting networks allegedly smuggling weapons and fighters from Iran killed 32 suspected militants Wednesday in Baghdad's Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, the military said. Word of the raid came after Iraqi police in Sadr City had said that a bombardment by U.S. helicopters and armored vehicles had killed nine civilians, including two women, and wounded six others. The police also said 12 people were detained.

The U.S. military said 12 suspects were detained during Wednesday's raids.

"The individuals detained and the terrorists killed during the raid are believed to be members of a cell of a Special Groups terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq into Iran for terrorist training," the military said.

Meanwhile, Iraqi authorities clamped a three-day driving ban on the capital and erected new checkpoints, while thousands of Shiite pilgrims began their annual trek toward a mosque in northern Baghdad to mark the anniversary of the death of one of Shiite Islam's key saints.

First-aid tents stocked with coolers of bottled water or offering food, dates, yoghurt and tea lined the streets as authorities scrambled to prevent a catastrophe from marring the ceremonies honoring Imam Moussa ibn Jaafar al-Kadhim, one of 12 principal Shiite saints who died in the year 799.

................................................... The top U.S. ground commander in the area, Task Force Justice leader Lt. Col. Steve Miska, said Wednesday that hundreds of additional Iraqi security forces had been deployed in Kazimiyah, but that American troops would stay away from the shrine out of religious sensitivity.

I would consider this only a start.

A small start.

Sadr City should be leveled.

It is time to raid supply depots on the Iranian side of the border. If they are going to bring their weapons into Iraq, it is only fair that we drop off some of our weapons in Iran.

I’ve thought that for a year now at least. We need to send a clear message that this will not be tolerated. Our young men and women deserve that from us.

And if that raid escalates into all out war. So be it.

We can fight them now, or we can fight them later when they have nukes.

If they are going to give us provocation, I say we fight them now.

They are all civilians. We are not fighting a regular army with uniforms and such. The terrorists are civilians.

a very good point that I try to make frequently.. A TERRORISTS is NOT always a soldier acting on behalf of a soverign nation.. although certainly then CAN be.. most are just plain INTERNATIONAL terrorists who want to take control of (or rather breed chaos in) Baghdad... God HELP us if we let them...

It may be a given that we won’t occupy Iran. It may be a big stretch to say we’ll go to all-out war with Iran. However, there are things we can do. There should be tit for tat escalations against them. If we identify a bomb-making factory and it happens to be in Iran, its destruction is simply a consequence of waging war against the U.S. Iranian infiltrators should be turned over to (Sunni) police for interrogation. Their bodies can be returned to Iran if the mad mullahs insist.

Thanks....BBC Report:

US raid kills 30 Iraq 'militants'

********************************EXCERPTS********************

In a statement, the US military said US and Iraqi forces had carried out an overnight raid on a group of buildings in Sadr City where Shia militants were based.

US commanders said they believed the cell was smuggling weapons and explosive charges that have been used against US patrols from Iran, as well as sending militants to Iran for training.

One of the main targets of the raid was a man who acted as a liaison between Iraqi militants and the elite Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), the military said.

It said the troops came under sporadic gunfire as they approached the buildings, killed two armed men they believed to be lookouts, then detained 12 suspected members of the Special Groups Cell.

"During the course of the operation, the assault force and the overhead aerial support observed a vehicle and large group of armed men on foot attempting an assault on the ground forces," according to the statement.

It said air support was called and US aircraft killed an estimated 30 militants.

The military statement was issued after the Associated Press quoted Iraqi police as saying nine civilians, including two women, had been killed in the US operation in Sadr City.

A military spokesman said there had been women and children in the area during the raid, but denied any had died.

Later, men and young boys were seen weeping over coffins outside a nearby hospital and hundreds of residents marched through Sadr City in protest against the raids.
