MBTA officers, Boston police vie for details at T work sites

The MBTA and the city of Boston are pitted against each other in a court battle about whose officers should be given lucrative overtime shifts patrolling T construction sites.

The dispute, which could affect MBTA projects across the state, began last fall when the city issued a cease-and-desist order to stop the MBTA from using its own officers to patrol the Huntington Avenue construction site on the Green Line.

In November, a judge allowed the MBTA to use its own Transit Police for the Huntington project until she made a final decision. Since then, the MBTA has completed the project, but the city and the MBTA are still waiting for the judge's ruling.

Yesterday, lawyers from both sides gathered in Suffolk Superior Court for their latest battle.

The city says it wants to ensure that officers who know the streets can ensure public safety. The MBTA says the city just wants to increase compensation for its own officers. Unions for the MBTA Transit Police and Boston police have joined the court fight on opposing sides.

One “details are a ripoff” segments years I heard on Howie Carr a few years back, had a woman caller claiming to be the wife of a cop, going absolutely hysterical about even the thought of “detail” work being cut back.

This is like puppies pushing each other around for a chance at the same public teat.

I’d have used a piglet reference, but thought it would be in bad taste.

Laws here in the Gay State require *police* details for projects which only require "flagmen" and other non-"professional" type people in other states. It's not unusual for cops in Boston to make $150K/yr thanks to these details.

Police in the Gay State are coddled like those in no other state and they consistently endorse and work for RATS.

Yeah. Even in the Repulik of New York, which I fled years back, the construction crew had orange cones and flashing yellow lights at construction sites.

These “details” are an affront to taxpayers. Cadillac Deval, does not care, obviously, because the unions like big spending Dems.

I can't believe I'm about to defend union weenies (DAMN YOU, GSC), but. . . Most folks say that cops (military & teachers, too) are underpaid. If you agree, and I'm not saying you do, then why do we care if they make some extra cash while sipping on a coffee watching some guys dig a hole? At least it puts a few extra cops on the road.

And when they occasionally get run over while standing there, most folks grieve for them. Who says, "Well, for $40/hour the bastard deserved it. " ?

Side note: I am not a cop. Hell, I don't even know any cops.
