A Clinton nomination will almost certainly yield a competitive general election. While Clinton is very popular among Democrats, overall public opinion is evenly divided--her favorable/unfavorable ratings have been near the 50/50 mark all year. The number who would definitely vote for her in a general election has stayed between 28% and 30%. The number who would definitely vote against has stayed between 46% and 48%.
Absent a major third party candidate, it is hard to envision Clinton attracting less than 45% of the vote. It is equally difficult to envision her reaching the 50% threshold barring a total collapse of the Republican campaign.
That could result in a situation where fringe third party candidates determine the outcome with candidates from the left hurting the Democrats and candidates from the right hurting the GOP. It might also result in a President being elected with less than 50% of the vote for the 4th time in the last five elections.
The competitive nature of a race involving Clinton is highlighted by recent polls showing Republican frontrunners Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson each leading Clinton by a statistically insignificant 46% to 45% margin. Clinton edges out Arizona Senator John McCain by two points in the latest polling.
While Obama and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards routinely outperform Clinton in general election match-ups, that does not necessarily mean they would be stronger candidates. It does mean that they are less predictable and at the moment have less people committed to voting against them.
Polling for the first full week in August showed Edwards with 13% of the vote (just nine points behind Obama). New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Delaware Senator Joe Biden, and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich each attract support from 3%.

Perot is retired. Sheehan is aiming at congress, not the presidency. The Ron Paul brigade perhaps spoiling on the right, Nader and Bloomberg probably separately running on the left. Will Pat Buchanan try to elect a democrat yet again? Who else will try to be a kingmaker.
Maybe Newt can step in as a third party candidate and save the day for Clinton.

Well, who wants to bet that just four days before the election, the MSM will just happen to dig up some horrific thing about the Republican they will hit at for all their worth?
Here’s something that most people don’t see. Due to their own experiences with the social policies of Hillary Clinton and her friends, a large portion of otherwise liberal/leftist men won’t vote for her.

Yes, but there are a lot of pudin-headed women out there who think Hillary is their champion. Remember men couldn’t stand Bill, but women just swooned all the way in and out of the booth, lighting their cigarette as soon as they got outside the polling station.
I’ll never understand the woman who would readily kill men they know who would act like Bill, but think he’s the sexiest thing on two wheels. “Oh he’s just a cute bad boy.” Idiots.
They’d elect a fifty year old guy with a 14 year old’s labido and common sense to make our national defense decisions. And now they’ll try to elect the first enabler.

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named will easily get the democRAT nomination. The day that happens, the Republican National Committee will start running “Bad Hillary” commercials at a rate of ten for every one “Good Rudy (or Ron or Fred or Mitt, etc)” commercial.
The biggest part of the electorate votes for the name they’ve heard most often. Get used to saying “President Clinton” again.
Don’t count out his gang like Hegel making trouble.

I did mention common sense too. I did because Clinton reminded me of a person I know who used to lie when telling the truth would have kept them out of trouble, and the lie would have damned them.
It was impossible for them to be truthful. Lying was second nature to them. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, except Clinton, a grown man.
Yes Clinton did blame everyone else. The guy never took responsiblity for anything. His appologies would go like this. I am sorry for what I did, Ron Brown assured me it was okay.
Your Hillary take is right on also. I say let the good people of New York keep her. She’s too valuable for them to replace.
When Hunter gets a National poll showing he can beat hidebeast... get back to me. Thompson leads the beast by 1% on Rasmussen’s latest... not bad for a non-candidate!
