Newsweek: Alarmed by Deniers
American Spectator ^ | 09 aug 07 | Paul Chesser

Now even the partisan-resistant public must acknowledge what conservatives have known for a long time: that Newsweek is driven by a leftist agenda, even if they won't acknowledge it themselves.

That can't be illustrated more clearly than by the magazine's cover story this week, titled "Global Warming Deniers: A Well-Funded Machine." Science writer Sharon Begley writes proudly and passionately in what she obviously thinks is an eye-opening expose' about the conspiring entities who "deny the science of climate change." Her Woodward and Bernstein-like prose tracks money passages from big energy producers to intellectual skeptics, who exist to undermine what she says is the consensus view: that human-induced worldwide warming is a threat to the planet's existence. Begley bemoans the results of a new Newsweek poll that "finds the influence of the denial machine remains

The MSM is partisan. They just pretend they're objective. What a joke.

Anyone else notice the left has stopped calling it “global warming” and switched to “climate change”. I guess they got tired of being laughed at everytime a record cold temperature was reached in someplace that is supposed to be baking. Or someplace experiences flooding, that was supposed to be bone dry.

Its more of a religion than science. According to Pope Albert, the proclamation of global warming is dogma. And no true believer questions the faith of the Church Of Gaia.

Statist buearacrats have long wanted additional tax revenues on consumption so they are likely suspects and/or a “UN Tax”. Under the aegis of “Climate Change”, all manner of nonsense can be foisted on the public. Likely be a “carbon tax”.

FYI -

Citizens in Great Britain may soon be hit by a blitz of top secret green taxes to combat the socialist bogeyman called global warming, reports the Daily Mail.

Under this proposal, the government would grab billions of pounds of extra revenue by not telling motorists when gas prices go down. So everytime petro prices drop, the tax on petro would automatically rise. So rather than drivers seeing that extra savings in their pocket, the government would keep the price high and grab the extra money for itself.

Then there’s talk of raising the annual road tax from a maximum of £210 to £5,000 in order to “combat car use and ownership.”

And a “pay per mile” tax could be added.

Next, Brits could see a washing machine tax, a dishwasher tax, a dryer tax, a lightbulb tax and an air travel tax.

Finally, the Tories plan to install “spies” in dustbins to impose a “rubbish tax” on households that throw away non-recyclable refuse.

The grand total of new taxes for a family of four would be an additional £1,163 per year.

I guess because Mayor Bloomberg has presidential aspirations all New York City residents in my area have been mailed at taxpayer expense a glitzy and expensive brochure on hurricanes.Since I know of no hurricane HITTING NEW YORK CITY in my 70 years I immediately looked for the last hurricane to hit New York City. With all the Hurricane ‘facts’in this expensive brochure there was no mention of a hurricane ever hitting New York City.

Good article.

I once looked into the follow-the-money claims made by the global warming alarmists. They are very lame. They go something like this: Exxon gave money to the Heritage Foundation or the CATO Institute. Shock and horror. Full disclosure, I too have occasionally given money to the Heritage Foundation and the CATO Institute. When Exxon Mobile gives to FreeRepublic, it’ll really hit the fan.

The amount given to free market think tanks is very small compared to the money given by the EPA for climate research. Every EPA dollar has a known purpose. One has to prepare a grant request to get the money. Most people are savvy enough to lean on anthropogenic global warming (AGW) in their request, which are then funded. This is science with an agenda. The few dollars that are given (freely and without taxation) to free market think tanks, might go to any purpose.

The only hurricane to strike New York City directly was in 1821. I think the Great Hurricane of 1938 was close enough to cause damage, but a great deal of land that is now heavily populated was then undeveloped. Things would be much worse today if a major storm were to hit there.

The Libs, as always, attempt to bend the real world (or at least our perceptions of it) to their political agenda.

“Glo-Bull warming” is just their latest vehicle to gain power over us all, which is all they really want.

Trying to refute illogic and hyper emotionalism of the Leftists with reason is like trying to argue with children - There's just no point to it. The mindset of the true Leftist is like the old Catholic church: They have not erred, they CANNOT err.

There is but one real answer to fanaticism, and that is total defeat. Sad but true.

Newsweek is a hack rag, my god I got a subscription to it once as gift a few years back.. I hadn’t read it in probably close to 2 decades.... it wasn’t great then it was absolute garbage now..... It was like reading the weekly world news only with a higher gloss print.

I know its tough to put out a weekly in an age when news is 24/7... but the one thing you can do is go in depth and actually report something meaningful and deep, not just what people already read about days ago from other sources.... And it should be so hard to keep political agenda out of your delivery when you do it.

Apparently for Newsweek it is....

You don’t need to be part of a conspiracy to know “human caused global warming is a scam”... over 90% of all greenhouse effect is caused by WATER VAPOR!!!! WATER VAPOR!! NOT CO2!!! and 80% of it is WATER VAPOR IN THE FIRST 30 FEET OF THE ATMOSPHERE!! C02 is a microscopically infinitesimle player in the “greenhouse effect”.

C02 does not CAUSE global warming... increased C02 levels in the atmosphere are a follower, not a causation. As the earth cools, C02 winds up trapped in things like the northern tundra, reducing atmospheric levels. As the earth warms and the tundra defrosts that CO2 is released... increases in CO2 are not a cause of warming of the climate, they are a result of the climate warming!

Climate warming and cooling has been going on for over 3 BILLION years, and to believe we are causing it is nonsense... I know its hard for atheistic leftists to believe since in their world view we are gods, but the reality is we aren’t... we are pathetic little ants who could no more destroy the earth with CO2 than we could shift its orbit if we all decided to jump at the same time... its an absolute JOKE scientifically to claim that human activity is causing climate change to any factor that would place life on this planet at risk.

We could blow every last human being to hell, detonate every last nuclear warhead, and life on this planet will continue.. We may kill ourselves off in a violent war, but we will no more stop plants from growing, animals from maiting, and microbes from dividing than we can stop the earth from turning!

These human induced global warming folks are the deniers, they are politically motivated hacks who have absolutely no credibility. The temperature of MARS is increasing, do they wish to argue that SUV’s and Smokestacks are causing that?

The complex system that is our planet is not going to die, right now CO2 levels are about 350 PPM, historically we know they’ve been as high as 450-500 PPM just in the recent past... and life continued on quite fine. CO2 is PLANT FOOD folks, its not the end of the world.

How ironic for Newsweak to speak of "well-funded machines" when it is evident that a coordinated campaign is underway to tie energy companies and other business interests to global warming skeptics in an effort to tarnish all. Al Gore and others have been using this exact meme in their speeches on a daily basis during the past week. Foundation money (Rockefeller and others) is certainly at work here, along with organization provided by...someone.

My educated guess: the Center for American Progress. Background funding comes from George Soros, and is run by Clintonites John Podesta and Harold Ickes. Their paid commentators include Eric Alterman, who, coincidentally, has been pounding the Big Oil/Warming Denier theme recently. Any of you folks who have better contacts than I do are welcome to investigate further, but I am convinced that this is all part of a larger campaign designed to assist the candidacy of a certain junior Senator from New York.

Next, Brits could see a washing machine tax, ...

Perused an article on new washing machines. It seems as if the new top-loading models are failing at getting clothes clean. And why is that? They have relocated the water level switches to lower in the tub to save water and energy, which in turn reduces the efficiency of the machine to clean your clothes. So bring back the Maytag repairman; you can surely repair the old one to get a couple more years use out of it.
