A homeowner was arrested after a burglar plunged from the balcony of his top-floor flat and later died in hospital.
The intruder suffered head injuries and died in hospital after falling around 30ft on to a concrete path.
Patrick Walsh, 56, awoke to find an intruder in his flat on Corkland Road in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, south Manchester.
Police say "following an exchange of words" the 43-year-old suspect fell from the fourth floor window on to the pavement below.
He suffered massive injuries from the fall, at around 6.10am on Monday.
The man was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with serious head injuries before being transferred to Hope Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 11am today.
Police conducted a detailed forensic examination of the flat after the incident.
Walsh was arrested on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm and bailed until November pending further police inquirers.
His solicitor, Victor Wozny, said today: "My client is not at liberty to say anything because he is under police bail.

Welcome to the liberal ideal for America.
This is such a non-crime.
Liberals are nodding their heads in approval, the homeowner being a ‘vigilante’ in their minds for interfering with a criminal in pursuit of his trade.
The homeowner failed to provide a safe work environment for burlgars. Instead, he should have helped the gentleman remove his valuables and held the door open while he loaded up his truck.
Don’t forget the scones and clotted cream. And, after they’ve had their fill, you are required to help them load your treasured possessions into their lorry and speed them on their way. Oh, don’t forget: since this transaction generates a VAT, you must immediately inform inland revenue and pay on behalf of the burglar.
Proving, once again, that defense of self and property is a crime in the U.K.
The arrest of the homeowner is a crime against humanity.
4000 young native Brits flee the UK each and every week. The utterly corrupt courts and police are a major reason. When polled as to why they are leaving, the young Brits say that they don’t feel safe in their homes, as one reason (also the high taxes and lack of entrepreneurial/professional opportunity).
It sounds like the homeowner committed the crime of locking his door. If he gets probation, he should be required to put his valuables in a box on his front steps every night. (Just getting my thinking right for the North Atlantic Union).
I’m so glad I left England. It blows me away how brainwashed the public is by their government. Heaven forbid one should protect oneself! “The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men that himself” John Stuart Mills (English philosopher 1806-1873)
I guess the homeowner should not have kept that bar of soap near the balcony!
If homeowners are permitted to defend themselves against thieves, they might try to defend themselves against taxmen next.
save for later use
They weren't from the fall, they were from the sudden stop.
The homeowner arrested? Unbelievable!
I was shocked at the thread title. Should have guessed it was in the UK. I don’t think this would happen in even the most liberal jurisdictions in the US.
“His solicitor...”
Whenever I see a sign that says “No solicitors”, I aways assume they mean NO LAWYERS.
I certainly understand that sentiment.
Why didn’t he simply claim he never got out of bed, and the intruder must have fallen out the window of his own clumsiness?
“Walsh was arrested on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm”
Sounds as if he just “had words” and the idiot fell backwards.
Not that it matters, either way.
It’s sick we worry so much about what happened to the CRIMINAL. Walsh already had a trauma; why add to it? Why must we add insult to injury?
