Self defence is pretty much criminalized in the UK.

‘4000 young native Brits flee the UK each and every week. The utterly corrupt courts and police are a major reason. When polled as to why they are leaving, the young Brits say that they don’t feel safe in their homes, as one reason (also the high taxes and lack of entrepreneurial/professional opportunity).’

That is a complete lie. Britain does not have utterly corrupt courts and police. The people leaving Britain that you refer to cite immigration as the reason and the pressure it is putting on local services, cost of living and tax increases. Nowhere does the article refer to corrupt police and courts or saying that they do not feel safe in their homes.

Here is the article so you can read it for yourself, presumably for the first time:

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/15642/4,000-people-a-week-trying-to-leave-UK

The 4000 people mentioned are those who are emigrating outside the EU, many more retire to France and Spain each week.

The 4000 people emigrating abroad each week are being replaced by 15,000 LEGAL Polish immigrants who come to Britain to work. But that’s OK, we like Poles and they make a positive contribution to both our economy and society. They are already outnumbering the muslims by a significant amount! :)

‘The Brits freed the burglar, locked up the homeowner for a few years, and the burglar sued. The homeowner’s name was, I think, Tony Martin.’

Both the freeing of the burglar and his subsequent lawsuit would have made legal history as the burglar was shot to death at the scene of the burglary. Tony Martin was jailed for his manslaughter. The ‘burglar’ was a 16 year old minor who was unarmed and running away when Tony Martin unloaded both barrels of a 12 guage shotgun into his back. Earlier Tony had been at his local pub telling everyone that if those kids came round his farm causing trouble he would kill them. But don’t let the real story get in the way of you all patting each other on the back. . . .

Wow, what a bizarre comment. You did not even read the article! Here are first 3 paragraphs, which totally belie your inappropriate statements:

"BRITAIN is facing a mass exodus of people looking to escape the crime and grime of modern living.

The country’s biggest foreign visa consultancy firm has revealed that applications have soared in the last seven months by 80 per cent to almost 4,000 a week. Ten years ago the figure was just 300 a week.

Most people are relocating within the Commonwealth – in Australia, Canada and South Africa. They are almost all young professionals and skilled workers aged 20-40."

They are NOT retirees going to Spain. These are young professionals and skilled workers. British crime is mentioned in the FIRST SENTENCE. Unbelievable!

"Click the link. It’s the 3rd floor he fell from (there is a sub-floor below)..."

You mean you want me to ... (gasp) ... read the entire article????? There is a long and fine tradition here at FR of commenting without reading the entire article!

Maybe the burglar was peacefully making his exit, and got tangled up in the homeowner’s windchimes.

‘Self defence is pretty much criminalized in the UK.’

The UK self-defnce laws are identical to those in most of the US:

Both countries only allow reasonable force. A person may use physical force to prevent imminent physical injury, however a person may not use deadly physical force unless that person is in reasonable fear of serious physical injury or death. Most statutes also include a duty to retreat (notable exceptions include Louisiana and Florida: see stand-your-ground law), wherein deadly physical force may only be used if the person acting in self defense is unable to safely retreat. A person is generally not obligated to retreat if in one’s own home (for example, a person doesn’t have to retreat from the living room to the kitchen, then to the bedroom, then to the bathroom) in what has come to be called the “castle exception” (derived from the expression “A man’s home is his castle”).

Invariably if a person is killed or badly injured as a result of self-dence in either country, the defender will be arrested or questioned until self-defence can be safely established.

Where does it say utterly corrupt courts and police?

You say the main reason they are leaving is crime, they say it is immigration.

If you’re going to add your own bits to articles put an asterisk next to them so we know where the fiction begins.

It is wonderful how there is a self selection, with the former colonies getting the best of the Brits and the mother country keeping the dregs. But how much longer can Britain continue to turn out such wonderful people in that society?

I, for one, mourn the loss of the Britain of Winston Churchill, Margret Thatcher, George Orwell, Robert Graves, ... and too many, many more to mention.

I've noticed a perverse trend in BBC America, with shows like Midsommer Murders where the characters are all White, British, civil and well education. True escapism.

Well, that may be because the majority partners in the production of that series are two American companies, A+E Television Networks and Hallmark Entertainment so I suspect it is representing what Americans expect to see of rural life in England. That’s the problem with learning about the world from TV fiction, you get it wrong.

Different case. Hale DeMar actually shot the guy, and even then he only got in trouble for breaking the gun ordinances of Wilmette, and not for defending himself per se. While I think even that is ridiculous, this situation is much more egregious as we are given to believe the burglar fell out the window while arguing with the homeowner.

The laws are being reversed in some jurisdictions here so the presumption goes to the citizen who defends himself, rather than the burden being on him to prove the required preconditions for self defense.

But if the laws are similar, bot in letter and in regard to the zeal with which they're applied and enforced, why do we constantly hear about cases like this in the UK? (I ask in both the literal and rhetorical senses)

Inspector Morse was coproduced by WGBH (PBS Boston affliate), they at least had the odd Asian, American or German. Midsommer is whiter'n a KKK laundry room and more English than bangers and mash.

I got the impression that Midsommer represented a yearning for an England that was English, a yearning by whom, I cannot say.

I've spent some time in England, and don't think I'm completely uniformed about the reality of England. I actually like it very well, and would like to return sometime on holiday (as we say when going to England.)

I was sorry to see the Tories dump Maggie and England dump the Tories, but I must admit Blair was about as good as I could have expected. I do not think it an exagerration to say that Maggie Thatcher saved the world. She was the necessary person for the success of Ronaldus Magnus.
