Taxation: Always ready to use a tragedy to raise taxes, the Democrats want to hike the gas tax in the aftermath of the Minneapolis bridge collapse. The country should be pleased that President Bush rejects the idea.
Democrat Rep. Jim Oberstar, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, has proposed a 5-cent increase on the 18.3 cents-a-gallon federal gasoline tax.
The Minnesota congressman says that over three years the extra nickel would raise $25 billion that would be placed in a new trust fund from which money would be drawn to repair or replace structurally deficient highway bridges.
We're not saying that our roads aren't underfunded. The American Society of Civil Engineers is probably correct when it reckons that "the $59.4 billion spent annually is well below the $94 billion needed each year to improve transportation infrastructure conditions nationally."
But like all tax raisers, Oberstar doesn't understand that government, at every level, has enough money to take care of its responsibilities without hiking taxes. The key is for lawmakers to stop spending taxpayers' money on programs and projects that are beyond government's scope.

With a budget rapidly ready to roll right thru the 3 trillion a year price tag,, It kind of makes ya wonder what part of that message many in Washington DC these days still won’t get.
November 2008 will be an excellent opportunity to clean out the spendthrifts on both sides of the aisle... of course, it’s all for the children. ;-)
NO NEW TAXES.
The Feds waste most of what they already collect. Let them act like actual adults and manage the resources they have.
Oooooh, a Trust Fund...we know Congress would never, ever raid a multi-billion dollar trust fund for other purposes, would they?

Yeah, like that's really going to happen. Taxes get raised, the money goes into a fund that ends up going for pork projects or Lord knows what.
