While in London, Diallo wrote down in Arabic three copies of the Quran from memory... WoW! One needs to be a muslim to swallow that bunkum, at best he wrote one, numbers two and three would have been copies of the first.
This entire article suggests that the author is a naive junior with a very limited grasp of history...and your State Department looks thoroughly stupid as a result.

from your link to the State Dept. original:
A Charno Arabic letter done in 1768 (Collections & Stories of American Muslims)
Surely the author meant to write ...letter written in Arabic in 1768...?
A photo of Ayuba (Job) Suleiman Diallo (Collections & Stories of American Muslims)
Captured in 1730 and someone took his photograph? Who writes this shiite? Oh never mind...

Some years ago, Amir Muhammad began researching his family's roots without any thought that it might lead him to America's little-known Islamic heritage. Until then, he assumed that most American Muslims arrived in the 20th century, and he was unaware of any Islamic connection in his own family prior to his personal acceptance of Islam 35 years ago. I take it this fellow never saw the miniseries "Roots." Kunta Kinte was Moslem, after all, and he was supposed to have lived at the time of the American Revolution.

You are quite welcome, SJB, as I think I speak for the majority of Freepers with the sentiments expressed.

:’) And Amir should note also that Moslems ran most of the African slave trade, and still do.

What nonsense. This drivel is just another attempt to turn legend, invention, and folk-mythology into PC “history”. I especially like the part where the Moor sailed with the Spaniards - who had just completed the reconquista in 1492 by expelling the Moors and restoring Christianity after Aragon and Castille were united under Ferdinand and Isabella. The only way a Moorish arch enemy of Spain would sail with them would be as a galley slave. I suppose we havn’t heard the part where Cardinal Ximenes was also a closet Moor! But today slavery is alive ONLY in Muslim cultures - as in Sudan and Mauritania.
