THE 66-year search for the wreck of HMAS Sydney is believed to be over.
The ship, in which 645 Australians died, is believed to have been found by a group of West Australians using a grappling hook and a camera last weekend.
The Sydney sank after a battle with German raider, Kormoran, on November 19, 1941, Fairfax newspapers said.
Video film of the find shows tangled wreckage over large, much longer than any other ship known to have sunk nearby.

One is clearly how HMAS Sydney, a crusier with a combat-experienced crew just returning from the Med ... was sunk by a surface raider - basically a freighter hull as a gun platform - no armoured decks, ..., etc.
Two, why the circumstances re: HMAS Sydney have been classified for so long.
Of interest by these lights will be the release of undersea photographs.
My great uncle went down on the HMAS Sydney. My Father who was six at the time was actually re-named in his honor.
