Intimidating Military Recruiters?

Here is the news story:

A fake bomb found in downtown Astoria Saturday caused the Regatta Grand Land Parade to be diverted.

The device was discovered shortly after 8 a.m. in the doorway of 818 Commercial St., an office building which houses the Army Career Center - recruiting offices for the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps - and several other businesses.

Army personnel arriving for work discovered the suspicious device and notified the Astoria Police Department. An Astoria police officer looked at it and notified Oregon State Police...

..."It was not a real bomb, but it was made to look like one," said Astoria Assistant Chief of Police Alan Oja, who was incident commander at the site.

Army Maj. Bob Gambrell, who oversees the Astoria Career Center and six other recruiting offices in Oregon, said that a fake bomb, "very similar in nature," was found roughly two months ago at the Portland Army recruiting office.

Astoria Police Officer Matt Clausen said the device had German writing on it that translated to "no war."

"It looked kind of like a radio receiver, but fatter and with something wrapped around it," said Clausen.

The fake bomb found at the Portland office had the words "white rose" written on it, also in German.

"White Rose" was an anti-Nazi resistence group in Germany during World War Two - putting two and two together, we can figure that some lefitsts, fighitng against the evil regime of Chimpy McSmirk BusHitler, figure they are akin to the anti-Nazi heros of yore. To hold such an opinion of themselves is rather stupid - but it is also not surprising...nor is it surprising that some of the anti-Bush fanatics have taken to terrorism to argue their cause. True, it was a fake bomb - but it was still designed to instill fear, and terrorism is nothing more than using fear as a means to gain political ends. What I wonder now is just how long it will be before some of these fanatics decide to make a real bomb? Even more worrisome: if we Republicans win next year, a large segment of leftwing opinion in the United States will consider such an event to be proof-positive that Republicans are manipulating the vote - this because a large segment of the left is convinced that 2008 is in the bag for them; that they cannot lose...people who think that there is no democratic recourse will be easily convinced to get help from terrorists to fight a common enemy (ie, the United States).

“Intimidating” = “terrorizing”

I guess just spitting on the troops no longer makes the cut.

The ecofreaks and anarchists were having a convergence on Astoria on Thursday to protest plans for a LNG terminal and so it is not surprising that the recruiting station was a target...sad commentary that the only thing the Willamette Valley exports anymore is terrorism.

I only pray that there was some merchant’s video camera covering this terrorist act.

Take them down to one of the local veterans watering holes and let them explain their actions.

“Take them down to one of the local veterans watering holes and let them explain their actions.”

I’m not too sure that is a good idea. I mean, if they don’t survive it, how are they going to learn from their mistakes?

That does, of course, assume that they are smart enough to learn...

Most vets would be fairly gentle with them.

Besides, lumps have memories. :-)

Maybe they’ve mellowed since then, but some of the Vietnam War vets I worked with, and knew, back in those days, would have been merciless. I KNOW some of the WWII vets would have been, and a few that I still know haven’t changed all that much since then, either.

I’ve always favored the “maim them, so they have time to reflect on what they’ve done wrong” school, myself. Killing them is only a momentary pleasure, and it’s bound to get you talked about. ;)

Well said. Anything below termination is considered being gentle so we’re on the same channel. :-)
