There are some key fob sized automatic rad detectors out now that are quite afordable. It is possible these are being issued to those officers on the street who respond to accidents.

Right, when I worked at a nuclear power plant each person was given such a device - you were required to wear it on your person at all times while you were in the plant. They were replaced every quarter and a record kept of your personal exposure.

They also had them scattered throughout all the buildings. They were small enough to fit handily on your key chain or on the lanyard for your security badge.

They could be read by a reader and there is an indicator window that can be read by the human eye.
