A fender-bender at Hoboken and Summit avenues ended with the trunk of a parked car popping open to reveal a box labeled as having radioactive materials, Jersey City police have told The Jersey Journal.
After a response that included cops, firefighters, HAZMAT and other emergency personnel, the father of the car's owner gave cops a plausible explanation for the box, police said.

FYI.
the father of the car’s owner gave cops a plausible explanation for the box, police said.
So what is it? I want to see if I think it’s plausible.
Labeled? End of story.
I hate those low-rent terrorists who carry around their contraband without proper Hazmat markings on it.
I just noticed the peculiar way this sentence is phrased. A good question would be, who is the car's owner, why is the car's owner unavailable for comment, and why was this Goran Kukic driving a car that he didn't own, that contained radioactive materials?
Where did you get the name of the driver?
I got it from the initial thread on the topic. Shouldn’t be too far down, being something of a slow night and all. Name sounds Serbian to me.
A couple of years back, I had an experience that indicates how seriously they take this stuff these days. A guy who had received a radioactive Iodine dose as a follow-up to thyroid cancer surgery was coming home from the hospital and stopped at a supermarket to shop. On the way out of the store, he walked by a fire truck, setting off the radioactivity detector in the truck. They followed him, called the cops, who called the FBI, and this parade of about a dozen law enforcement vehicles finally stopped the guy in the street next door to where I live. They cordoned-off a two block area and evacuated us while they were in the process of figuring out exactly what was going on.
I think these are two separate accidents, per Freeper Woodman.

That sounds crazy but I am so glad they can detect this stuff because we can’t (without reading up on the subject a lot and getting an expensive device)
Goran Kukic is not a Micronesian name. I believe it is Serbian. He was involved in the “fender bender” and fled the scene, but was captured and detained. There was a box in the trunk of the car, which he apparently did not own, that emitted high levels of radiation. The box apparently was removed, and radiation levels in the vicinity are now normal. The father of the car’s owner has provided an explanation for the presence of the box containing radioactive materials in his son’s car that police deem “plausible.” No mention of the name of the car’s owner, or the name of his father, who is providing explanations.
That’s my understanding of the situation.
Personal possession of Geiger counters has not (yet) been prohibited. You too could detect it, if you wanted to.
Well, somebody wrote the plate numbers down. And that’s public info.
I'm wending my way back through the 240+ posts in the first thread on this, to try and untangle what's what. I may be confused, jennyjenny, but I'm not sure that I'm confused yet, lol.
I dunno....I’ve been traveling and it’s late, lol.

“A good question would be, who is the car’s owner, why is the car’s owner unavailable for comment, and why was this Goran Kukic driving a car that he didn’t own, that contained radioactive materials?”
talk about peculiar ...
Kukic was in a different accident alltogether on the Garden State Parkway, not Jersey City.
The article says the car with the box marked radioactive was parked, not being driven - which makes it not too surprising that the owner might not be immediately available but a relative might be.
Th only thing curious is the on-scene reporter freaking out about high levels, when the lack of activity in the background seems to show it’s no big deal.
You are confusing 2 different accidents. The 2 people in critical condition had nothing to do with the Jersey City accident.
Of course you know what you must have to calibrate your Geiger counter...
I just saw the report about the car being parked, toward the end of the other thread. So, there are no names at all, associated with this?
AAACK! Turn that thing off, you’re going to give somebody a seizure.
That’s about as scary as seeing a box labeled “Suitcase Nuke”.
Dosen’t look like it yet,
But names don’t seem to matter much - people here want to know the religion
Except if it’s a shooting in a church in Missoui
A shooting in a church doesn’t raise people’s antennae to such a degree, sad to say. As I work my way through the uproar in the other thread, I see that Micronesian is the nationality of the church shooters. Their religion is not hard to guess.
The driver who is in critical condition is named Goran Kukic. He is not the person involved in the “radioactive” fender bender accident. That is what I was trying to say to the poster here who though Kukic was involved in the fender bender.
“Most Geiger counters also have an audio readout that sounds one “click” for each particle count. These particles are emitted at random intervals, and a large number of particles produced in a short span of time sound almost like static from a radio. “
By the way I was just reading about Hans Geiger on Wikipedia. I wonder if he was a nazi?
Then we don't have any info on nationality, ethnicity etc. on the driver yet, whose friend lent him his car but his friend's dad mollified the police with a plausible excuse.
Hm.
Don’t depend on the media or government to keep you advised on radioactive hazards.
The most you’ll get is “remain in your homes and stay calm”.
Given that, a Geiger-Muller detector is not all that expensive. Check Ebay and Labx, don’t look at the old Civil Defense ones.
If these events keep happening, it may be a good investment and if they don’t, you can at least tell real antique Fiestaware from the modern copies.
As I work my way through the uproar in the other thread, I see that Micronesian is the nationality of the church shooters. Their religion is not hard to guess.<<<<
I thought the shooter was Samoan. Time for me to quit reading for the night, we’re all starting to confuse various threads with each other.
This sounds like an utterly boring minor traffic incident that happened to get excess media coverage because a car owner had a MARKED Radioactive box in his/her trunk from his/her field of work.
That Fox 5 NY reporter is a total freaking headcase, from the demeanor he took on air during that report.
“A shooting in a church doesnt raise peoples antennae to such a degree, sad to say.”
OH I’m sure any shooting raises the antenna, but the instant it looks like the perp is not an illegal or Muslim, or even worse, a Christian shooting other Christians, interest will disappear real quick.
Do you need a defibrilator? LOL
“I wonder if they really tick faster and faster the strong the reading like on tv.”
The really do. And they likely also have a gage that give you a readout on the level of radioactivity present.
LOL!
Text report of the accident in Hoboken, NJ...
In case anyone missed it; here is the original news video report that apparently prompted the earlier thread about the radiation levels...

There were two accidents... One a fender-bender on Hoboken. The other was a car that rear-ended a box truck that was sitting on the shoulder of a highway... The name is from the box truck accident.
Thank you for the ping Liberty Rocks.

Micronesia Roman Catholic 50%, Protestant 47%

Thanks for the report Liberty.
We bought a Geiger counter several years ago, when we first started homeschooling our kids. Turns out, the dust bunnies on the floor of our basement had minute amounts of radiation! Must be the radon. ;o)
Thanks for the link. and Ping.
No wonder he was so tripped up when reporting... I saw the comments last night on the YouTube comment section, but didn’t catch it at first... Thanks.
You’re all welcome... Did you all catch that within that video news report the reporter (after he said there were high levels of radioactivity) was told to say “No Radioactivity”? I saw mention of it in the comments at YouTube last night, but didn’t catch it when watching the segment. At post #42 they have a link where the directions have been isolated. Then when you listen to the newscast at YouTube you can see that this is exactly when the reporter become befuddled. I’m just wondering what the real story is here...
“Im just wondering what the real story is here...”
So am I Liberty...can’t find a follow-up story here with any details...sounds strange.
Yes, very strange story and results.
LOL, you know my thoughts.
I actually had an old CD one bought new in box but was unable to verify it worked without a radiation source. How do you know that stuff is calibrated and working? I sold it for what I paid for it and want to read up on dosimeters and things that actually measure your dose.
Or, go to ebay or an antique store and get a real old red Fiestaware plate, or look for Vaseline glass (yellow-green clear glass that is UV fluorescent)- they both contain uranium and can be used as a check source. These will check function, but not really be calibration tools. You usually won’t care about exact calibrations- most things barely move the needle, and some things send it off scale (like a Fiestaware plate can). An uncalibrated meter will give you a good idea of what’s going on, and you don’t need to know if it’s 1500 counts/min or 2000 counts/min.
The usual CD meter was a Victoreen 717 or 715, it was an ion chamber. The meter scale starts at 1 REM/hr and goes up to 500. This is for much higher levels of radiation, usually beyond mere “contamination”. If you want to be really paranoid get both- the Geiger will go offscale at high levels and the ion chamber won’t read low levels.
There are places that will calibrate and check either type, but they cost a bit, but you will be absolutely sure they work.
