That’s because Bobby thinks only his pitchers are entitled to an extra 3” on either side of the plate, a concession he was very successful at obtaining throughout the 90’s.

Amen...

Why else would striking out all three batters be scored KKK? Hmmmmm?

Since Michael Jordan was never called for fouling or traveling what color does that make him?

Green.

What is it with the Statesman and Austin in general? It seems that every issue coming from that area is a “racial” issue. Man, I’m glad I don’t live there anymore.

I can just see the announcement now from the league, “immediately, all players will be allowed to supply their own personal umpire to be substituted for league umpires when the player comes to bat. All substitute umpires will be required to adhere to the leagues definition of the strike zone as well as other appropriate rules”. LOL

This is meaningless. How do we know that those percentages don't line up with the actual frequency of strikes thrown? I think you'd have to analyze this in a different way; take a subset of pitches that you can verify are actually strikes, and see how many are called differently.

No, your suggestion has too much of a possibility of comporting with reality, and these folks' spent too much time on their study to risk that.

I know hitting wise that there is a difference between, say, batters from the Dominican Republic & Puerto Rico than their white teammates. DR & PR batters are more free swinging & less likely to take a walk. Put plainly, they are more aggressive with the bat.

This is not simply an observation, but is a statistical fact.

Now if I was a DR/PR pitcher who grew up throwing to aggressive hitters, I would throw more temptation pitches out of the zone, knowing that a good number would chase. I would key my pitching to their aggressive batting. (Hence, I would be purposely throwing less strikes but would in reality be getting more swinging strikes...that is, that would be the case up until I faced more walk-minded batters).

Ridiculous. How about a study showing that a white person walking home at night is 43.5% more likely to be mugged than a black person?
Complete nonsense.

Good question. The next moronic study will be to decide who’s racist by whether one drinks coffee with cream or black.

All of these bogus “studies” can be broken down into only three possible outcomes. Here are the ones for this one:

1. Umps treat pitchers of races other than theirs harshly.
2. Umps treat pitchers of races other than theirs favorably.
3. Umps treat pitchers of races other than their own race the same as they treat pitchers of their own race

Of these, from a statistical standpoint, the least likely is number 3. Therefore, by chance, the “authors” have almost a 50/50 chance of making their desired headline.

If only this study leads to the adoption of the QuesTec system to judge location of every pitch, or some other objective means of calling balls and strikes, it’s worth every penny spent. Having sat behind homeplate often enough, I’ve seen that the strike zone varies hugely from batter to batter, from pitcher to pitcher, from one team to the other, and based on the stage of the game. IMHO, there is no excuse for that. If you want a game of chance, play dice, but baseball is suppose to be a game of skill. I go to the game to watch the players compete aginst each other, not against the umpire.

The calls sometimes shape the games so that they arrive at the predetermined fixed result, and the right team wins, so that the money bet on the game flows the right way.

Unless the players themselves throw the game, then the officials don't necessarily have to fix it.

Witness the recent NBA official and the Toledo college football team in at least 2005.

This is done independent of race.

It has to. Not all batters are the same size.

For the survey, researchers collected data on every pitch from the 2004-06 seasons. Only pitches for which umpires had to make a judgment call were used in the study.

Who decided which pitches required "judgment"?

This statement alone tells you the study is useless. The person conducting the study had to supstitute his judgment for that of the umpire. The racial bias of the data analyser now comes into play. Hence the study may show nothing more than the bias of the data analyser.

At a professional level, the difference between a ball and a strike can be a matter of as little as a tenth of an inch. If the study only considers judgment calls, by definition the calls are always in this tiny grey area; where the margin of error is extremely high.
