Illegal immigrant to leave church haven
Chicago Tribune ^ | 15 August 2007 | Antonio Olivo

Elvira Arellano, the illegal Mexican immigrant who has avoided deportation for a year by taking refuge inside a Humboldt Park church, said today she plans to leave her sanctuary to participate in a new push for immigration reform in Washington.

At a news conference at the West Side church where she has been living for exactly a year, Arellano said she intends to use her status as a figurehead for the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants to leverage support for more lenient legislative reforms.

. . .

It was not immediately clear when she would leave the church. She said today she would be on the Washington Mall for a prayer and fasting vigil Sept. 12. Speaking in Spanish and English, she called for a national economic boycott on that day to help bring attention to the plight of illegal immigrants.

Would ICE please arrest this woman and process her for deportation as soon as she leaves the church premises?

to help bring attention to the plight of illegal immigrants

And a bank robber hopes to bring attention to the plight of those guilty of making undocumented withdrawals.

I hope somebody's ready to haul her in and deport her as soon as she steps foot outside the church.

BTW, I understand the separation of church and state, but where the the church get the right to harbor law breakers? It made sense with religious governments, but not here.

Speaking in Spanish and English, she called for a national economic boycott on that day to help bring attention to the plight of illegal immigrants.

This line of reasoning supposes that we need the illegals more than they need us.

Unfortunately, many Republicans, by snuggling up to big business and its craven desire for cheap labor, leave the clear impression that this is so.

Democrats, on the other hand, are doctrinally wedded to the transnationalists' belief in open borders. We have so much while Mexico has so little, they lament. (And this, of course, is entirely America's fault. Or so the story line goes.)

By and large, I am just not impressed with either party when it comes to the matter of securing our borders and maintaining our national sovereignty.

In any case, it is really difficult for me to feel sorry for those who flagrantly violate the law, and then dare the violated country (which they profess to love) to begin enforcing the law.

SOME churches act like government entities. They understand where revenue is derived and will do anything to keep the streams of money coming in. I very much agree with you and think these “churches” should loose their IRS status and pay taxes on revenue since they are sucking it out of local/state/federal taxpayers to harbor illegals.

She doesn’t understand the “We the people” part of our Constitution. The people decide eventually and if the people don’t want the illegals here..........they go. What part of “illegal” doesn’t she understand.

If Chertoff is serious, he’ll have ICE waiting at the door and she’ll be back home before nightfall.

Actually, there is no law (at any level, so far as I am aware) that establishes "safe houses" or "sanctuaries" of any sort. The authorities' refusal to arrest and deport this woman is a perfect example of self-imposed limitations.

Obviously, the Feds don't want the bad PR.

But the thought of having lost all control of our borders...well, that is apparently something they can live with.

The dumb broad thinks Revolution is in the air. This will be a good test to see if she's reached celebrity-lawbreaker status and whether or not law enforcement will treat her as she should be----like any other criminal.

Rev. Marco Cardenas leads Elvira Arellano, her son Saúl, and other activists in prayer Wednesday before giving a news conference commemorating her year of taking refuge in Adalberto United Methodist Church, on the West Side.

"If [immigration authorities] want to arrest me over there, in front of Congress, in front of the White House or in front of the Senate, and deport me in front of all those people that make the changes in the law, it's fine," Arellano, 32, earlier told the Spanish-language, Tribune Co.-owned newspaper Hoy while inside the Aldaberto United Methodist Church on Division Street. "But I'm not going to stay quiet, nor wait for them to come to arrest me and deport me. I have to fight and this is part of the fight."

Paging Secretary Chertoff ...

Nope! Jailtime. She was already deported once. She came back. That’s a felony!
