Indian Women Beaten by Neighbours for Evangelization

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on August 14, Uma Jasmine (38) was beaten by the next-door neighbours of a local family that she had been witnessing to for the past few months in Bangalore.

The neighbours saw that the wife of this family had started to pray and read the Bible and were angry at Jasmine for sharing her faith.

When Jasmine and her seventeen year old daughter went to visit the wife, the neighbours severely beat them. Jasmine is currently suffering from breast cancer and her heath has worsened as a result of her injuries.

Thank the Lord for Uma's boldness in proclaiming His Word in an environment of opposition. Pray that her faithfulness will be a light that draws her persecutors to Christ (Matthew 5:14-16). Ask God to give healing to her and her daughter.

Pastor and Church Members Beaten by Militants in India

Pastor Babula Changra Paik, another church leader and an elderly man were beaten by approximately fifty Hindu militants during a Sunday morning church worship service at a house church in the city of Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. Church property was damaged and Bibles were torn during the attack. The militants were angered by Pastor Paik’s alleged involvement in forcible conversion activities. Pastor Paik denied these accusations and insisted that he only conducts worship services for local Christians.

Pray for healing for these three Christians. Pray that they will trust God to enable them to proclaim the Gospel even while suffering (2 Timothy 4:16-18). Pray that those who accuse Pastor Paik of forcible conversion will be silenced.

They’re good Muslims for beating her, because she has become an infidel.

Christian Rights Activists Arrested by Police in Egypt

Middle East Christian Association (MECA) logo

Dr. Adel Fawzy Faltas (61) and Peter Ezzat (23), two members of an international Christian rights organization, Middle East Christian Association (MECA), were arrested by the police in Cairo on August 8. The men were reportedly arrested in connection with the case of Mohammed Hegazy, a Christian convert from Islam who is currently in a court battle to have his conversion legally recognized (for more details see last week’s P&P story on Hegazy, click here). According to MECA’s international leader, Nader Fawzy, the arrests are a part of an effort to stop the work of the organization in Egypt.

Faltas, the leader of the MECA’s Egyptian branch, was arrested in his home at approximately 2:40 p.m. after he had held a highly public online chat session with Hegazy in which details of his case were publicized. The police barged into Faltas’ home, destroyed his property and confiscated his computers along with some books. Faltas was blindfolded, handcuffed and led away in a police car.

In a separate incident, police arrested MECA group member, Peter Ezzat, in his home. His computer was also confiscated.

The men are accused of insulting Islam, destroying the reputation of Egypt, converting Muslims to Christianity and having contact with a foreign organization. They are expected to face charges relating to an allegedly anti-Islamic message posted on a Christian website. At last report, both men were being transferred to the State Security Investigation headquarters in Lazoghly.

Pray that these believers will be released. Pray that they will be able to maintain a consistent walk with God during this difficult time. Pray for protection for other Christian workers who are serving the Lord in Egypt.

The assailants are most likely Hindu: Bangalore is more than 80% Hindu and the oldest mosque in Bangalore was destroyed by an angry Hindu mob back in 1992.

Muslims in Bangalore tend to keep their heads down, since Bangalore Hindus are very militant.

Because of Muslim terrorism, Islam is thought to be anti-Christian, but in many places in India there is a severe religious intolerance towards Christianity while the presence of mosques is readily accepted.

You can be sent to jail in India for trying to convert people to Christianity. It is not just a muslim problem. India is a country full of inequities toward their fellow man. They have the caste system and almost no middle class. Doing business there for a foreign company is a nightmare as the local manufacturers are highly protected and are not competitive on the world market. The women are often expected to abort female children, the spread of sonograms around the country is driving that trend. They are not a human rights friendly country like they make themselves out to be. They are basically hypocrites.

This is an ugly inceident, but I don’t think it’s typical. In my experience, Hindus and Buddhists are more tolerant of other religions than most. When I traveled in India I saw a picture of Christ on more than one Hindu family alter.
