I have never heard of anything like that before!?
I saw the same thing. Wierd.
When I was in the second grade I contracted polio after I got the shot. But it was gone within a few months.
My father came down with polio in September, 1962, right after our last long family vacation (the whole month of August in a 1957 Chevy station wagon, 4 kids, can you imagine!?). I can’t remember if we took the sugar cube before or after the vacation, but 1962 was definitely the summer of the live-virus Sabin vaccine.
He thought he’d come down w/ the flu, but it turned out to be a non-paralytic case of polio, affecting only his right leg. Last case of non-paralytic polio in Texas for ~3 decades after. Went thru months of therapy, and I can remember crying & asking my mom why Mr Bishop down the street couldn’t have been the one to catch it; this was the next Spring when Little League was starting again and Dad couldn’t play catch w/ me. I’m sure that Dad had some tough moments, but I do not ever remember a time when I saw or heard him complaining about his fate. In a later, more litigious time, I’m sure there would have been a lawsuit filed, but not back then. Dad’s company, Schlumberger, took good care of him and us.
Anyway, not to hijack the happy engagement thread, but the Sabin vaccine definitely caused some full-blown cases of polio.
