Immigration officials say they won't halt raids during 2010 census

WASHINGTON – Immigration officials sharpened their message a day after being coy about whether they would agree to halt enforcement raids during the 2010 census.

“We won't entertain any request to scale back our efforts,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Kelly Nantel said Friday.

Census officials had planned to speak with immigration agents about curbing enforcement during the population count, the Census Bureau's second-ranking official said in an interview earlier this week.

Raids during the population count would make an already distrustful group even less likely to cooperate with government workers who are supposed to include them in the headcount, Deputy Director Preston Jay Waite had said.

When asked Thursday if the immigration enforcement agency would consider suspending raids during the census, spokeswoman Pat Reilly said, “If we were, we wouldn't talk about it.”

“We're an investigative agency,” she added. “We don't talk about how we target our enforcement activities.”

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone, including illegal immigrants, in the census.

Immigration agents informally agreed to cooperate with the Census Bureau during the 2000 census by not conducting any large-scale raids, said Waite and Kenneth Prewitt, who directed the Census Bureau during the 2000 count.

Public discussion about possibly repeating the policy in 2010 knocked the Bush administration off message a week after two members of the president's Cabinet announced stepped-up efforts to enforce the nation's immigration laws.

Nantel said she wanted to clarify the enforcement agency's position.

“I don't want there to be any question in the American people's mind as to whether or not ICE would suspend enforcement efforts,” Nantel said. “The answer to that is emphatically no.”

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone, including illegal immigrants, in the census, never to breach oaths of office, nor shall the Census Bureau suborn waiving defense and protection of the Constitution and its lawful Citizenry as it fulfills its mandate.

On Lou Dobbs’ show tonight they asked the salient question: Why should CA keep getting more representation in Congress because of all the Mexican squatters, while a state like PA loses representation because it only has US citizens? Good question indeed.

I don’t know if it’s still on but the racial classification of “Hispanic” was supposed to be dropped from the U.S. Census in 2010. “Hispanic” encompasses African descendants, Asians, Caucasians, Native Americans and ethnic mixtures.

Immigration agents informally agreed to cooperate with the Census Bureau during the 2000 census by not conducting any large-scale raids, said Waite and Kenneth Prewitt, who directed the Census Bureau during the 2000 count.

In effect they agreed to do next to nothing, which is exactly what they were doing, before, during and after the 2000 Census.

They may be lying to us, but at least they are pretending that they want to do the correct thing.

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone, including illegal immigrants, in the census.

Where exactly in the Constitution does it say that?

Who came up with that BS that the Census Bureau has Constitutional power? There’s no Census in the Constitution.

Here's the actual text of the Constitution regarding the census:

The Constitution includes the phrase "[An] Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct."

Contrast this with what the writer of the article asserts:

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone, including illegal immigrants, in the census.

Plainly the Constitution does not require that illegal aliens be counted if Congress directs that they not be.

They author of this article is either completely, embarassingly ignorant of what the US Constitution says, or he's a liar.

My money is on the latter.

Thank you!

Anything that purports to be a Federal office or bureau had better FIRST AND FOREMOST be (originalist) Constitutional, else it has no right to exist or act, whether or not originally mandated in the Constitution.

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone

It is done to compute representation in Congress

The Census is supposed to be counting citizens of this country.

Frankly, I think the census department could be eliminated. The Constitutional count could be done by counting births and immigration against deaths and emigration, once the borders are sealed.

I prefer the term "illegrants". It just rolls off the tongue.

“We won't entertain any request to scale back our efforts,”

Well if they scaled them back anymore than what they've put out the last 6 years, they would not be doing anything.
