I’ve done some searching and found this story posted all over various political websites and blogs, both rightist and leftist. But there doesn’t seem to be any other source than this BSalert. Has anyone seen any other news sites that have this story?

Seems that a few (FEW) here are having a figurative field day bashing Creationists, too.

A quick Google search of “Bill Nye moon Waco” turns up hundreds of links which reference the article in the Waco Tribune Herald. There seems little doubt that the article did actually appear in that newspaper. The accuracy of the story itself is another matter, although I see no reason to doubt it offhand.

GOD made it all and can call reflected light “lesser light” if HE wants to... he holds the patent!

Things like “science” and “facts” totally piss me off.

(sigh)

These meatheads don’t represent the mainstream of Texas. I hate repeating myself.

It was the Texas Baptists, in fact, who broke off from the Southern Baptist Convention because they didn’t agree with the SBC’s ultra-traditionalist, Islamic-like views on women.

The headline should have been, “PBS Front Man Uses Elementary Science as a Pretext to Mock Bible”.

I find Bill Nye off putting on a good day.

It’s not how you present “basic truths”, but whether you use obvious truths to attack faith. If you are trying to present scientific truth, why do you need Genesis at all? He apparently only presented the Bible to ridicule it.

The ancient Greeks knew that the Moon reflected sunlight. Galileo never got in trouble for pointing out that through a telescope one could see the shadows of mountains on the moon near the the day/night terminator.

How did Don Herbert go on week after week, year after year, without finding the need to correct his audience’s misplaced belief in the spiritual?

Why don’t these self-styled sophisticates ever ridicule the Koran if they want to illustrate some fine point of Science? If Bill Nye had pointed out some demonstrably false Suras he’d have been lucky merely to have been booed and have some of his audience walk out. He’d be in hiding and in fear of his life.

BTW, is there even the slightest possibility that Bill Nye knows enough Hebrew to know if the original words in Genesis exclude the possibility that the Moon, as a light, was a reflector and not a source?

“I do not believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.” - Galileo Galilei

Too bad Bill Nye doesn’t engage his intellect.

Galileo was a little like Bill Nye. He had a few important insights, but presented them in an abrasive and high handed manner. The difference is that Nye’s insights are third hand and half digested.

Not trying to stir the pot, but this reminds me of a co-worker I had once. He was a fundamentalist Christian who took everything in the Bible very literally. One day the subject veered onto carbon dating fossils. He dismissed all that as junk science because his sect's interpretation of the Bible was that the universe was created about 6,000 years ago and it was physically impossible for anything to be older than that. I asked how he explained the vast fossil deposits, ancient seabeds made of shells millions of years old, etc. His answer was that God made it that way just to test Man's faith. End of story. All of science disposed of and neatly explained away. Carbon dating doesn't work because it can't - nothing can be over 6K years old. End of story. Period.

I didn't talk to him any more than necessary after that, and we both were better off. :o)

Ah, Bill Nye, the Science Guy.

Used to be somewhat of a regular on John Keisters “Almost Live” here in Seattle.

Got alot of tricks up his sleeve. As I recall, though, many didn’t work.

He gets an ‘A’ for effort, though!

Wow, am I the ONLY Mystery Science Theater 3000 watcher here? =O

Nope, I don't remember that line...but I do remember "Trumpy Dumpy". I haven't seen an episode of MST3000 in ages. :-(
