They obviously didn’t listen to enough Pink Floyd when growing up. ;D!

I live in the area, and if my memory serves correctly Nye’s appearance was quite a while back. I seriously doubt this is true or we’d have had a good laugh about it around the water cooler.

This is (apparently) the FULL TEXT text of the original Waco Tribune article, as posted at forums.nightly.net:

'The Science Guy' is entertaining and provocative at MCC lecture

Thursday, April 06, 2006

By Tim Woods

Tribune-Herald staff writer

Audience members who expected to see Bill Nye “The Science Guy” conduct experiments and wow their children received quite a surprise Wednesday when Nye spoke at McLennan Community College.

Nye instead addressed such topics as Mars exploration, global warming and energy consumption, particularly oil and gas. He even ruffled a few religious feathers along the way.

The scientist with a background in stand-up and sketch comedy kept spectators interested, entertained and at ease with his funny, sometimes hilarious, delivery.

Speaking as part of MCC’s Distinguished Lecturer Series, Nye spoke to two audiences, one at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m., of about 600 each. He said the first audience, though littered with young children listening to some rather adult scientific topics, “was very supportive.”

The second group also was rapt from the beginning, greeting the scientist with a raucous standing ovation upon his introduction.

“You haven’t heard the presentation yet!” Nye told them.

Opening with a discussion of Mars and his hopes for further discovery on the neighboring planet, Nye encouraged the audience to take interest in discovery and “change the world,” a mantra he repeated throughout.

Nye indicated that the presence of water in Mars’ atmosphere — evidenced by the planet’s ability to form frost — leads him to believe that there is a strong possibility that the planet once supported life.

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light.

A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence.

“We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children.

Nye also was critical of what he said was governmental agencies’ lack of action, even lack of understanding, in protecting the Earth from global warming and wasted resources.

Nye’s educational science show won 28 Emmy awards during its television run from 1992-98.

It seemed most in attendance were pleased to hear Nye speak, and some were even awed by the presence of a childhood icon.

“How cool is that, to be face to face with the man, Bill Nye?” said Jared McClure, who worked sound and video for the event. “And he’s funny, too.”

It seems that Mr. Nye was attempting to provoke his audience with "scientific proof" that the Bible is wrong.
Let us hope that his knowledge of SCIENCE is more complete than his knowledge of the BIBLE.

I’m surprised anyone would believe this story for even a moment.

It seems that Mr. Nye was attempting to provoke his audience with "scientific proof" that the Bible is wrong.

That is what is seems like to me, too. Assuming this story isn't a fabrication, it would be very interesting to see the way he presented this. Were the people offended because they really believed the moon emits light, or were they just offended because they thought he was making fun of the Bible?

It really isn't about science against biblical truths. Science teachers well know the limitations of science.

This sort of tale is much more the social science engineers using simple scientific theory as a tool to belittle faith in general and classify it with mythology and superstition.

Secular humanism, within the academic community is at war with Christianity and much of the battle over creationism and intelligent design is waged by administrators and not by science professors.

Right! Reflected light is still light!

He criticized literal interpretation of Genesis and was wrong.

Thanks for finding the original story. This puts a bit different slant on things than the BSAlert article. So this woman was offended, took her children and left? That’s her right. I seriously doubt Nye intended offense. Sounds like most people in the audience were entertained.

nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16
So, what's "the Science Guy" doing bringing up the Bible? Oh, he just thought he'd generate some helpful headlines from a (paid?) appearance in Texas.

Gee, what a surprise, he's a global warming demagogue and Malthusian jerkoff.

About the carbon dating thing, fossils (most) wouldn't be able to be carbon dated. Even Macroevolutionists estimate that carbon dating is good for 'only' about 65,000 years. (the carbon 14 formerly in the atmosphere would have gone by then).

Meanwhile, several 'fossils' (they wouldn't be technically fully fossils because....you'll see) were found with organic material (including DNA) still in them. If millions of years old, this material should have either rotten or fossilized long ago.

Furthermore, under some conditions--which incidentally could have been in place during the Flood when hot, mineral-rich water could have come up from underground sources, and carcasses and plants could have been rapidly buried, protecting them from scavengers and some bacteria, and exposed to high pressures--fossils can be formed rapidly, not during millions of years.

Then there are individual tree fossils which straddle several strata of rock supposedly representing millions of years of time.

Respect your views and your choice to be a Macroevolutionist, but Creationists aren't necessarily stupid, and while they are dependent on faith (upon which Macroevolutionists are also dependent), science can be used to support their models of the origins of life and universe about as easily as the Macroevolutionist's models.

Or fungi, and, if they can be seen and fossilized, bacteria and protozoa. (covering bases).

the SBC’s ultra-traditionalist, Islamic-like views on women.

What is your evidence for that statement, please?

Texas Baptists vs. SBC

Texas Baptists aren't exactly liberals.

Call me a traditionalist, but I believe that marriage should be about mutual love, understanding, and respect, not control and domination.

I concur with your statement about your beliefs. I decry the fact that too many males have absolutely abused the ‘wifely submission’ principle into as you say, a control/domination emotional or other club.

The real SBC and Scriptural husband EARNS his wife’s respect and her glad (or at least willing) cooperation by his kindness, wisdom in considering her perspective, her insights and her intelligence.

It isn’t ever really a power struggle between man and woman, it’s a power struggle between self and God: Will the marital partners submit to God’s Word and, in doing so, honor each other? Preferring ONE ANOTHER, with the husband held accountable by God for the final decision of the two.

The real SBC and Scriptural wife is glad to let a real man lead.

Chivalry and all that.

Quite different than the abusive relationship we see between the Clintons....
