Fred Thompson: Roe is "Bad Law, Bad Medicine," Vows to Oppose Abortion

Likely Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson repeated his position against the Supreme Court's landmark decision in 1973 that allowed virtually unlimited abortions. He also said, if elected president, he would use the bully pulpit the position offers to speak out frequently against abortion. Thompson made the comments in a weekend interview with CNN, where he was asked if he would "actively push to overturn Roe v. Wade."

"I think Roe v. Wade was a bad decision. I think it was bad law and bad medicine," Thompson said in response.

"You don't just get up one day and overturn the entire history of the country with regard to nature and major social policy, without any action by Congress, without any action by the American people or constitutional amendment, and that's what happened," Thompson explained.

The former Tennessee senator continued, "It shouldn’t have happened. It ought to be reversed."

CNN host Larry King pressed Thompson to go further.

"So it wouldn't be a speech a year or two speeches a year; you would promise on both of those issues a sustained effort if you were the president?" he asked.

"Well, I don't think as the president you can do anything halfway," Thompson replied.

"I mean, if you take a position, you're bringing the whole office of the presidency there, and you have a bully pulpit," he concluded. "You have an obligation to speak about those things that are important to you, and those things are important."

Thompson's comments came days after ABC News unveiled copies of a one-page position paper on abortion. The paper contained a pro-life statement on the front and one geared to abortion advocates on the back.

The prominent actor also commented on Friday about some legal work he did for a pro-abortion group and how he did so as a member of a law firm and didn't agree with the beliefs of the client.

Another example where Fred stands on this issue. I don’t know how more clearer Fred can be. No to abortion.

Thompson's comments came days after ABC News unveiled copies of a one-page position paper on abortion. The paper contained a pro-life statement on the front and one geared to abortion advocates on the back.
This part is misleading.
1)A good part of Thompson's comments are identical to what he said months earlier.
2) The two pages don't contradict each other, as I recall. And according to the ABC report linked in this article, David O'Steen, executive director of the National Right to Life Committee, also talked with ABC News and said there no indication on the papers as to who wrote them and whether they accurately represent where Thompson stood then or now is questionable. So, the documents, as presented, are evidence of nothing.
This smells.

Thompson better watch out, he’ll get elected. Already the entire left establishment including all Democrats, the media and anti-Americans are gearing up to do battle with Fred Thompson. You can tell he is the target of the left by the intensity of the opposition to his campaign.

Thompson could be another Reagan.

Oh, there will be a lot more stink before this is over with.

Fred is "In The Line of Fire" between both sides.

The rest of the Republican bunch are just waiting, like the victim in a Jaws movie, the know he is out there, they know how hard things will shift once he declares in a couple of weeks (that is an unofficial statement by me, not the FDT camp).

The left is scared beyond all reasonable comprehension, they are and have been gunning for him for weeks and he is not even "running". It really has been a sight to behold, they fear this man.

I don't know how all this will play out. I can be realistic, and know that he could disappoint, but my gut and my mind are in agreement that we are looking at a winner here.

What's not to like about that, eh? (Of course, Caleb1411 and yours truly aren't exactly dispassionate on the subject of Reagan.)

“like a victim in a Jaws movie”

That is what I see with the supporters of some of the other candidates, they are getting hysterical.

Paging hysterical Duncan Hunter supporters to tell us that this STILL isn't enough to dispel their doubts about Fred's stance on abortion baseless and nonsensical objections to Fred that exist only because they're afraid their own candidate will disappear once Fred joins the race....5....4....3....2....1....

Vows to Oppose Abortion"

That is NOT what he's saying. It's bad LAW because it was decided in a COURT ROOM, NOT the CONGRESS...

Wrong.

“So it wouldn’t be a speech a year or two speeches a year; you would promise on both of those issues a sustained effort if you were the president?” he asked.

“Well, I don’t think as the president you can do anything halfway,” Thompson replied.

“I mean, if you take a position, you’re bringing the whole office of the presidency there, and you have a bully pulpit,” he concluded. “You have an obligation to speak about those things that are important to you, and those things are important.”
