An environmental protester hugs a British police officer Saturday near London's Heathrow Airport. Organizers hope to attract as many as 1,500 people today to protest a proposed third runway at the airport and greenhouse gases released by air travel. LONDON For the hundreds of climate-change activists who have camped out near Heathrow Airport for the past week, there is only one way to reduce the carbon footprint of aircraft: Stop flying so much. "Aviation is a luxury we can live without," said a protester named Merrick. Booming air travel, he said, is multiplying greenhouse gases just as the climate-change imperative starts to bite. "It has to be scaled right back," he said.

For all you warmers out there, environmental activists (as the mainstream media likes to call them) are on their latest campaign to combat climate change stop flying so much.
Why are they targeting aviation? They will tell you that it's because aviation is considered a "luxury." Protesters have been sitting outside London's Heathrow airport for days. A protester said, "Aviation is a luxury we can live without" and that we need to scale back right now.
What they won't tell you is that they aren't particularly fond of aviation because they see it as a tool of the rich. Only the evil, filthy, disgusting, insipid, nasty rich get to fly on those airplanes ... especially the cretins in first class. I've been in aviation for over 30 years .. trust me on this one. Many people absolutely hate aviation, especially private aviation, because they deem it to be a playground for people more successful than they. For goodness sake, don't confuse them with facts. Like the fact that the value of the average privately owned piston (that means non-jet) aircraft in this country is less than the price of a complete new bass rig. (For those of you in more urban areas, a bass rig is a bass boat, motor, electric trawling motor, tackle, a cooler full of beer and a trailer.)
An airport watch group in Britain says that there should be a direct tax to stifle aviation growth ... otherwise "it will be impossible to change the mindset of a generation that thinks little of hopping cheap flights for weekend pursuits."
Talk about changing mindsets. How do we change the mindsets of these myrmidons who have glommed on to this global warming and climate change nonsense? In just the last month NASA has changed its temperature data, and now we find that the hottest year on record was 1934, not 1998? Day after day the evidence mounts that these global warming/climate change folks are completely full of it .. and day after day the mainstream media ignores the evidence.
These anti-aviation "activists" are merely being true to their first cause, the destruction of capitalism. Airplanes are seen as a capitalist tool .. and thus to be attacked. Neal Boortz

We can’t use sailing vessels either to cross the oceans.
We are using up the last of the ancient winds just like we have almost used up the last of the ancient sunlight.
These people have one agenda: depopulate the earth.
Well, I agree with them. They can exit first and set the example for us all by their heroic sacrifice..
(Of course, I might change my mind about all this peak oil this and peak coal that along with peak sun after their demise.)
How can 15,000 worthless bureaucrats travel the globe to discuss ways to tax Americans in an fraudulent effort to save the planet from global warming if they stop traveling?
No, we must quit flying to save our sanity.

why dont we just crawl into caves????

PLANET is the operative word here.
Do these people realize what air travel means for World commerce, and for human mobility? For one thing, a big chunk of Europe’s economy depends on the ability of tourists to fly there from all over the globe.
As much as I like Boortz, and as much as I agree with his opinion, this statement is way off base. I haven't priced small airplanes in a long time, and I quit flying in 1984 because of the expense, but I seriously doubt you could get into a small plane (other than kits or ultra-lights) for less than $100K. You should be able to get into a nice bass boat for under $40K.
If his statement was true I would own a plane and be flying it every weekend. As a pilot he should know better.
How many of them flew in to participate in that lieelt dog and pony show? /rhetorical question
You can get a complete rig for about $22K at Bass Pro Shop.
These freaks should be chained to the asses of livestock and made to catch the earth killing methane with garbage bags.
AL Gore first !
You’re correct. I got out of private aviation in ‘90 because paying $30+ an hour for a 152 just didn’t make sense on my budget. I believe most new small airplanes (4 seaters max) run well over $100K.
Not to say I am not doing my part, though. Why, this past weekend I drove a F350 SuperDuty pickup, hauling a trailer to a local dragracing event where we watched and participated with people using exorbitant amounts of gas simply for fun.
Ahhhhh.....nothing like the smell of 107octane racing fuel in the morning.
Odd that it's taken so long to come up.
The "human mobility" you speak of produces arguably bad consequences.
And the effect of air travel on commerce is not an argument for damaging the stratosphere, IF that were shown to be the case.
Says it all, really.
Not being a bass fisherman, I don't really know the market. I was assuming that $40K would buy a really nice rig. $100K might buy a really, really cheap airplane.
I have been on quite a few flights to Europe and once to New Zealand, many US flights but my favorite mode of travel is behind the wheel of my SUV. That’s the ticket!
That’s what “liberalism” is all about - it might as well be called “elitism” straight up.
Environmentalists are all about restricting “the public’s” use of natural resources, with the intent that the elite will be able to use them at will.
Examples:
Al Gore’s “reduce your carbon footprint” speeches and movie, while consuming 12 times avg at his home, and flying all over the planet.
Celebs with redwood decks.
How ‘bout we save the world by having all the windbags stop talking? I’m sure that would stop “global warming” although with all the windbags out there on TV, hollywood, it would toss us into the throes of an “Ice Age.”
You must have flown ATA recently!!!
Flying is for the rich? I don’t think so. There are cut rate airlines flying out of the UK these days selling tickets to various airports on the continent for only 8 or 10 pounds.

The travel economics in England have really changed in the last few years...
Seems like only yesterday that CO2 was officially labeled an air pollutant and already we have lifelong opponents to it.
Bring back the Horse and Buggie!!
Oh, wait. Horses produce methane. Kill all the horses!!
Because

Would have to become:
We are using up the last of the ancient caves just like we have almost used up the last of the ancient sunlight and winds...
Odd that it's taken so long to come up.
For God's sake, don't mention that Chlorofluorosulfonic acid is used as a fuel additive to suppress contrail formation on spy planes...
What a bunch of dolts they want to curtail air flights which then would have to be moved the old fashion way i.e. cruise ships whose mileage is calculated in feet per gallons rather then as an aircraft where you get miles per gallon. Now I certainly am no rocket scientist but using their way we would have worse conditions then we do with aircraft DUH. For the record the QE II is said to have only gotten 39 feet feet per gallon (est}
Stop. Global. Whining.
End of problem, end of story.
Won’t happen in our lifetimes, however!
CA....
I quit flying because I didn't want to ever become separated from my Swiss Army Knife.
Try driving from Davis, CA to Knoxville, TN in early January with a miserable cold and an upset stomach caused by cold medicine when you could fly in one day of misery instead of drive for five, even in a Navigator. This year I'm flying first class and it will cost me about $600 less than driving did last year.
Kewl ... just took a 4500 mile road trip from Texas to Oregon and back again .... armed, packing, no TSA idiots and no baggage limits .... I can deal with this.
“We are using up the last of the ancient caves just like we have almost used up the last of the ancient sunlight and winds...”
~and oxygen, don’t forget the ancient oxygen. Oh my!! And the melting glaciers and ice caps are releasing the last of the ancient oxygen!
Oh! The horrors!!!
There is nothing like watching the country change and being under your own power, but travel when you are sick is a bummer.
