Care makes an excellent point. Imagine you’re a farmer; you borrow to buy seed, work the soil, raise a crop and are about to sell what you’ve raised. The next day, free food arrives. What’s the value of your crop ?

You mean like our farmers and welfare state?

Like Americans who prefer to go to food banks for their free food, rather than go through the “tedious paperwork” of applying for food stamps. Some people will always take the path of least resistance.
