GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — Hurricane Dean spared the Cayman Islands the worst of its fury on Monday as it headed for a collision course with Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, sending tourists fleeing for the airports and locals searching for higher ground.
Dean was already a powerful Category 4 storm as it raked the Cayman Islands. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it could grow into a monstrous Category 5 hurricane before slashing across the Yucatan Peninsula and emerging in the Gulf of Campeche, dotted with oil rigs.
Dean was several days from Texas and its path still uncertain, but the state is already saturated after an unusually rainy summer and officials were taking no changes — emergency operations centers opened, prison inmates were moved inland, and sandbags distributed.
The Mexican resort city of Cancun began evacuations and arranged for extra flights to help tens of thousands of tourists leave before Dean's arrival. The hotel zone was quiet on Monday, nearly all guests gone.

Okay. These storms come with a lot of angry lightning. They can be directed to the HQ of ANSWER, Code Pink, The World Can’t Wait, George Soros, and more. And in wonderful West Indian speak, the storm can then “drop a lash” on DC.

The standing joke is if you run into trouble ... the LAST thing you want to do is contact the Mexican police. Mexico is hopelessly corrupt - like Aruba ... .only the violence and kidnappings are in the open.

But, honestly, I was exhausted at the end of the day, constantly looking over my shoulder/listening to native conversations and being on alert for anything suspicious took some of the fun out of it.
I'd go back, almost certainly will, but for anyone thinking about a Mexico visit, for heavens sake use your head! Avoid known trouble areas (Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana, etc.) and stay alert, and enjoy yourself!

I don’t know what to say other than whoever is retired or reaching retirement age should think about moving to the Republic of Panama or elsewhere. I live in the Republic of Panama. (I was born here and am an American first and foremost.). Everything is so much cheaper than the USA except imported foods from the USA, which is just a little more expensive. Many MDs are US board certified. Medical attention for you and your pets are much, much cheaper here. Car insurance? Very cheap. Also, very few lawsuits…almost non-existent…Not like in the USA. It goes on and on.
One and one half years ago I almost never hear American English (or any other English accent) spoken in the supermarkets. Today, it is an everyday experience.
Just a thought. Get out of the USA. As much as I love my country, I just can’t stand seeing it being destroyed bit by bit.
I’ll tell ya, nothing like being greeted with military with machine guns. They were also on the corners of Cartehena, where we stayed. We were warned so much about keeping track of luggage and being “aware” that it made me paranoid. I bought my emeralds and counted the days (10) to pay my pesos and GET OUT.
I never let my Dad live that down. On the beach below the hotel, I got hailed with pesos as I laid on my blanket. My Mom was “surrounded” by males asking for a date and dear old Dad sat in a lounge chair snoozing through it all.
The highlight was looking down from the hotel balcony - it was on the corner ... and seeing a male unzipped and whipping something around ... as a teen, as first I didn’t know what he had in his hand ... first thought was that it was a snake ... nope ... .
There were too may riots in Bogota to visit the city so we went to local villages. I’ll never forget the contrast. DIRT floors and color TV. The little urchins took great pride in rubbing the bellies of these helamonster that scared the crap out t of me.
NEVER again will I go to a country that really has no real rule of law.
Ah, those fun-loving Columbians. Maybe someday I’ll get there... ;^)
World travel can be very educational. But you have to travel with the idea that people everywhere are -- people.

If you look at the “Atlantic floater” loop, you’ll see that just as Dean passed 85 degrees west longitude about an hour ago, it veered north a little bit. It’s just like it was thinking, “Hey, I’m gonna miss Cancun!”
Prayers for those on the ground. Rarely do you see a Cat 5 hit land. IIRC the US has only seen three hit at that rating. Even Katrina had slowed down when it came in.
But if Cancun is spared, go somewhere else. Its like going to another country without actually going to another country. Nothing but American chains and all sorts of tacky things aimed at Americans. Might as well stay in the US if you want to have a vacation that American.
