Radio: Women drawn to conservative talk
New York Post ^ | 08/20/07 | Carrie Lukas

Posted on 08/21/2007 7:42:47 AM PDT by Minnesocold

Green Stone Media, the feminist-founded radio network ("Talk that women really want to hear") is defunct.

Typical liberal behavior: Assuming everyone wants to hear (and agree with) your message — and no accountability when your ideas fail. "Talk that women really DON'T want" was driven out by low ratings, as women didn't care for their messages. Does that mean women don't want to listen to other women? No. The surprise in the article is that large numbers of women are turning to conservative talk, and conservative female talk hosts are thriving.

Carrie Lukas at The New York Post offered the numbers August 20th to back it up:

Laura Ingraham, an outspoken conservative and former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Thomas, has been on the air since 2001 and is now heard on 340 stations. Ingraham draws an audience in excess of 5 million, and regularly ranks among the top-10 most influential radio hosts.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger draws an even larger audience with very different programming. It can be best described as an advice show, but is anything but touchy feely. "Dr. Laura" serves as a hard-hitting host, unabashedly lecturing her callers about their morals and values. Other women, such as Martha Zoeller, Janet Parshall and Tammy Bruce, join these two powerhouse hosts.

Of course, most significantly, women don't just listen to women radio hosts. Women tune in to men on a wide variety of topics. Rush Limbaugh's 20 million listeners include millions of women. Millions more tune in to hear Sean Hannity and the other conservative, male talk-show hosts around the country. Although Ness may not want to hear it, Limbaugh and conservative talk radio apparently is programming for women.

The ladies love El Rushbo.

Given a choice between two talk show hosts...Laura wins with me, hands down. Rush brought me into the talk radio "fold"...but Laura is FAR better a host. In my NEVER so humble opinion. ;)

I love Rush, and am a recovering liberal Democrat because of him.

Question.....

My husband and I have been recommending Rush to a few people lately, and we've been getting responses ranging from 'that hate monger?' to 'that right wing nut?'.In other words, they hate him without having heard him.

What was it that made you turn his show on for the first time?

I like listening to Rush because he's funny and also very calming to listen to. Some of the others just wind me up so tight that I feel the need to punch something after listening to their programs.

According to "researchers" women's preferences are explained by evolution.

What was it that made you turn his show on for the first time?

I found the show by total accident about 17 years ago. I was looking for the baseball game, but apparently they played that day so El Rushbo was on at night. I heard this big booming voice talking about how he was about to perform a caller abortion. It was truly something I didn't expect to hear on radio. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and wanted to hear more.

I first listened to Rush around 1992, with a co-worker who listened every day on his lunch hour. I thought Rush was a pompous a**. When I became self employed, I had the chance to listen to him over the years and found myself agreeing with him and laughing at great EIB parodies. By 1998, I realized I was not a liberal any more, left the DFL party and became an independent. By 2000, I became a proud conservative and vote accordingly.

Tell your friends that if they've never listened, they cannot comment with any authority. Give them the stat (Stages Magazine poll) that most people get their news from and trust El Rushbo. It may take a few tries (like me), but they also come to know and like his show.

I love Rush first and Laura second.

It is actually comical how I first got introduced to Rush. I was a hard core liberal in my 20's and my liberal friends told me I had to listen to how terrible a man by the name of Rush Limbaugh was and I should really tune in if I wanted to hear how scary the right wing machine was.

Anyhow, I did my liberal duty and decided to give him a listen. At first I would contradict a lot of what he said and wasn't really listening to what he had to say because I was on the defense.

By the second hour I found myself very afraid. I agreed with a lot of what he said and was cracking up at the femi natzi references he was making (this was during the Anita Hill fiasco).

Anyhow, I never told my liberal friends that I actually liked Rush, and I never told them I bought his first book. LOL!!

Now I have finally realized I am more of a conservative and find that I get really cranky if I cannot get my Rush fix at least 3 times a week. ;o)

If she podcasts it, it’s not a free one and there is so much free content out there from other, lesser hosts who are pretty good.

I listen to conservative talk radio here in DC (WMAL) at least for 16-18 hours a day. Starting with Grandy & Andy, Chris Core, Rush, Sean, Mark Levin & Chris Plante.

If I’m not their biggest uber-fan, I don’t know who is...

I don’t particularly like his Hannity and Colmes show, but his Hannity’s America isn’t so bad.
