China's massive export industry has provided ginger contaminated with a pesticide, fish food raised in untreated sewage and toothpaste containing a solvent – and now children's clothing containing the poison formaldehyde.

According to a report in the Auckland, New Zealand, Sunday Star Times, an investigative team from the city's TV3 Target program has detailed how scientists found formaldehyde, a chemical preservative, in wool and cotton clothing at levels hundreds of times higher than levels considered safe.

The chemical has been used as an embalming fluid and in clothing to preserve a "permanent press." It also has been used over the years in foam padding, and is used extensively in composite wood products in construction.

Research by the World Health Organization has concluded that exposure to formaldehyde in concentrations of 20 parts per million can cause eye, skin and nasal irritations, asthmas and cancer.

People think it’s weird I wash all my new clothes before I wear them... Whatever they put on the clothes to make them crisp when you get them irritates my skin, so I wash them...

Pretty soon we’ll end up wearing buckskins & moccasins, we’ll have to plant our own gardens and raise our own animals for food...

very retro

I agree! Not only that, it’s a great lesson in free market for these kids. Nothing wrong with the PJs, it’s their stupid parent’s fault for not researching their purchase better.

The free market cures all ills.

I wonder if the rise in the cases of childhood autism has anything to do with these products from China? With babies and toddlers mouthing toys, etc.? Scary thought.

Even if you wash the clothing thoroughly some it contains carcinogenic dyes that can't be removed by normal washing. About halfway down this link gives a little more info.

Agreed, but thats harder to do than you might think. Some things that claim to be made somewhere other than China were actually merely assembled from parts made in China. China has it’s tentacles into everything.

Remember the good old days when Sam Walton kept Walmart selling only American made stuff.

I went to a store this weekend to buy a birthday gift and every item I checked was made in China. Finally I found cups made in England.

"good luck figuring out which vitamin C came from China and which didn’t!"

Puritan's Pride claims that all of their vitamins are made in the U.S.A.

People think it’s weird I wash all my new clothes before I wear them...

Do you mean there are people who don't? Ick!

Maybe that's why cashiers look at me funny when I am buying clothes. I tell them just to toss them in the bag instead of folding them nicely because they're going into the hamper as soon as I get home.

All the more reason for buying clothes at a second hand store. By the time the clothes get there they have been plenty washed and all you have to worry about is washing out someone else’s body odor. I know, yuk!
