U.S. intelligence chief says in El Paso he's worried about "terrorist gateway."
National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell told the El Paso Times in an interview following his talk to a Border Security Conference last week that he's worried that terrorist groups, such as the newly regrouping al-Qaida organization, are paying more attention to the Southwest border as a way to enter the United States and cause "mass casualties."
Recently declassified intelligence summaries show that al-Qaida is regrouping in the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan and is looking for ways to penetrate the United States, McConnell told the Times.
McConnell said terrorists already have been crossing the Southwest border into the United States, but the numbers and other details are classified, the Times reported.
Meanwhile, the Times also reported this morning that McConnell said the number of Iraqis seeking asylum as they entered the United States along the Southwest border has nearly tripled in one year -- and the year isn't even over yet.
Those immigrants entered a country in South America or Central America using forged documents and took advantage of the lack of visa requirements to work their way north from country to country, where they tried to cross into the United States, McConnell told the paper.

WE ARE GOING TO GET HIT AGAIN BECAUSE OUR GOVT. IS INCOMPETANT AND GREEDY. The borders must be closed immediately and a wall must be built. Liberals will probably prevent that. Criminal illegal aliens must be deported, but the ACLU will prevent that too.
And lets change the legalities of immigration...42 years of mass immigration (since the "Swmimmer" and company managed to get the 1965 Immigration Act passed) is well past long enough...this is an immigration boom thats duration is unprecedented in American history

Just because someone's on the move doesn't make them an immigrant. A visitor, an invader, a terrorist...but not immigrant's.

It really wouldn't effect the number of folks seeking asylum, as most do so at the legal ports of entry.

Basically means he doesn’t know. If the number of Iraqis CAPTURED at the border has tripled, think how many made it through. This country is most likely crawling with terrorists.

MI, what happens to someone who crosses the border illegally, but says he’s seeking asylum? Are they released until a hearing for asylum is held?
