Circus Sued For Alleged Elephant Cruelty

Circus Defends Practices, Says It Controls Animals Humanely

POSTED: 2:18 am EDT August 24, 2007
UPDATED: 2:27 am EDT August 24, 2007

NEW YORK -- A lawsuit, seeking better treatment for circus elephants, will proceed.

After seven years of legal wrangling, a federal judge rejected efforts by Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey to derail a lawsuit alleging animal cruelty.

Animal rights groups said the use of sharp hooks by trainers, the routine use of chains, the separation of baby elephants from their mothers and other circus practices are violations of the Endangered Species Act.

The circus is defending those practices, saying it controls the animals humanely.

But a lawyer with the Animal Welfare Institute said the organization looks forward to exposing what she called "the suffering" of the elephants.

Why don’t PETA people go to India and south/east Asia and get some lawsuits going there about how they treat elephants?

Well PETA?

I’ll grill a nice big chunk of cow meat this afternoon while I wait for your answer.

Elephants - one of the big reasons I go to the circus - as well as the big cats, trained dogs, clowns, high wire acts, the pretty girls.

...violations of the Endangered Species Act.

Yep, we've got to protect those native North American elephants. Do you realize that there's so few of them that they'll be extinct very soon. (Do I really need a sarcasm tag?)

Truthfully, those things are cash cows for them. The owners usually treat those animals better than they do their wives.

People think that when the handlers hit an elephant with a stick or a pipe they are being cruel, and that is a joke. Watch an elephant crash through trees and thorny bushes 6” in dia. without even blinking, then compare it to a guy swinging a switch at them.

Ever felt an elephants hide? Watch it scratch its butt on barbed wire because it feels good, then try and tell me a human with a stick is hurting it.

If the animals aren't being mistreated then well and good.

But if they are, it should be ended.

For the same reason enviormentalists don't go to China and tell them to clean up the enviorment. They know they will be killed without hesitation the second they open their mouths! Its a practice we sorely need here!

I wouldn’t mess with elephants. They’re a lot bigger than I am.
