The Conditions Of Petraeus' Iraq Report

WASHINGTON, Aug. 19, 2007
(CBS) Weekly commentary by CBS Evening News chief Washington correspondent and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer.

Sixteen years on Face The Nation has taught me one thing: When I ask a question and guests start laying out conditions such as "first let me tell you," or "the real questions is," or "it is important to put that in context," I know we're headed down the old rabbit trail that will take us anywhere but to a straight answer.

When people want to answer, they do so quickly, directly and clearly. When they don't we get all those conditions and lectures about the importance of context.

So excuse me for getting a little suspicious after hearing the White House is proposing some new conditions on the delivery of General Petraeus' long-awaited report on progress in Iraq – conditions such as the White House wanting the general to deliver the report to Congress behind closed doors while cabinet officers do the talking in public.

And, suddenly we're told the general won't actually write the report but that his thoughts will be incorporated in a summary prepared by the White House.

Mind you, this is the report the president has said over and over that he will use to decide where we go from here in Iraq.

Over and over, we've been told not to rush to judgment until we hear from the general.

Now we're hearing all these new conditions.

Maybe it's because I've been dragged down the old rabbit trail too many times by too many people with something to hide, but this doesn't sound like we're headed to a straight answer.

No, this sounds like anything but. And that is a real shame. E-mail Face the Nation.

And, suddenly we're told the general won't actually write the report but that his thoughts will be incorporated in a summary prepared by the White House.

Mind you, this is the requirement set by Congress and yet here is Bob Schieffer lying to his CBS News audience that the White House has changed the ground rules.

Now we're hearing all these new conditions.

If that is the first CBS News has heard of it, that statement is admission of gross incompetence on the part of CBS News. Or a lie.

Schieffer lies, soldiers die.

Some surprise huh? A CBS “reporter” in bed with the Defeatocrats!

Cronkite, Rather, this guy, and many, many others who have worked for CBS over the years.

Nothing more than an outlet for the DNC.

He’s already being criticized before his report is even out. There really are no depths to which the Dims will sink in pursuit of their pathetic agendas. They want to see GEN Petreus fail and they want us to fail in Iraq. Why? So they can point their pointy little fingers and say “See? I told you so!”

Beneath contempt, one and all

Prior to this the MSM was saying that any report WRITTEN by Gen. Petraeus should be taken with a ‘grain of salt’ in that it would be biased and skewed.

Hard to play a fair game when the losers keep changing the rules.

Schieffer doesn’t care; he was lieing and he knows he was lieing. Media has moved beyond bias straight into outright propaganda. They no longer care for the truth or fact, their one goal is to defeat President Bush, regardless of the cost in lives or american prestige. They are completely invested in surrender and they will say and do anything to support that position. After all, it is the position of their masters, Reid, Pelosi and Soros. I would not be at all surprised if Bob got a big fat bonus check for ole george soros after this screed. He is a disgrace...and his show is now rightly known as disgrace the nation.

The only surprising thing about any of this is that anyone other than those on the set actually watched Shieffer say any of this. Does anyone really tune in this show?

LOL, good grief, Schieffer does not know who Petraeus’ reports too?

And that he will be questioned before Congress? And that the Dim Congress wrote the legislative requirements?

Of course he knows, so he is lying to his viewers, so CBS can then take a poll.

Law seems clear to me: the White House is to prepare the report. Does Schieffer think the President should disobey the law?

P.L 28-110:

A) The President shall submit an initial report, in classified and unclassified format, to the Congress, not later than July 15, 2007, assessing the status of each of the specific benchmarks established above, and declaring, in his judgment, whether satisfactory progress toward meeting these benchmarks is, or is not, being achieved.

(B) The President, having consulted with the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, the Commander, Multi-National Forces-Iraq, the United States Ambassador to Iraq, and the Commander of U.S. Central Command, will prepare the report and submit the report to Congress.

(C) If the President's assessment of any of the specific benchmarks established above is unsatisfactory, the President shall include in that report a description of such revisions to the political, economic, regional, and military components of the strategy, as announced by the President on January 10, 2007. In addition, the President shall include in the report, the advisability of implementing such aspects of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, as he deems appropriate.

(D) The President shall submit a second report to the Congress, not later than September 15, 2007, following the same procedures and criteria outlined above. ***

(3) Testimony before congress.- Prior to the submission of the President's second report on September 15, 2007, and at a time to be agreed upon by the leadership of the Congress and the Administration, the United States Ambassador to Iraq and the Commander, Multi-National Forces Iraq will be made available to testify in open and closed sessions before the relevant committees of the Congress.

So CBS is bringing out the Big Guns, ie. Bob Schieffer, to make the Dems’ case on the war in Iraq. Little Gun, Katie Couric, must feel offended.
