I still believe that the islamic extremists are a minority and that most people in that region would be more than happy to live in peace, work and take care of their families. They want their own version of the American dream.

Exactly HC, someone should take a close look at each and everyone of the countries that has a border with Iraq and then look at what there is to secure regarding the worlds energy needs, which come largely from many of those countries.
Between Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, lies much of the worlds oil reserves and since we are not allowed to drill here or there, dig for coal, build nukes or do whatever is needed to be self sufficient in energy we have to be concerned about huge quantities of the worlds oil reserves not to do so would be sheer folly.
