Boy kills snake at petting zoo

CINCINNATI, Aug. 24 A 10-year-old boy who said he hated snakes killed a 10-foot python at petting zoo by stomping on the reptile's head.

Scott Braunstein, a reptile handler who brought the snake to the St. Bernadette Festival in Amelia, Ohio, last weekend, said he was shocked by the boy's violence, The Cincinnati Enquirer said Thursday.

The snake, named Popcorn, was a non-poisonous albino Burmese python.

Braunstein, who operates House of Reptiles in Dry Ridge, Ky., said the boy approached him and told him that he hated snakes. The child then raised his leg and stomped down on the snake's head, Braunstein said.

A man believed to be the boy's father grabbed the child and said, "This is why I don't take you anywhere," before disappearing into the crowd, the newspaper said.

"I have never, never had anything like that happen," Braunstein told the newspaper.

Another Far Side caption in need of a drawing.

That was my first thought.

Life imitates art.

They’re fairly common as the albinos are bread for pet owners.

Oh please. PETA are a bunch of animal killers themselves, and are the epitome of the screwed up wacko lib organization solely wanting power over your life.

But if you -- or your kids -- come after my dogs intending harm, you better be prepared to be in a world of hurt. Count on it.

The snake that was killed was somebody's pet. This vicious brat just killed it without provocation or a thought to any damage or consideration of its owner, who clearly cared for his pet. A kid 10 years old should be made to pay for it at least. It was no accident. The father who ran away from the scene, dragging his brat kid, is the worst one of all. You don't think the brat and his deadbeat father need to pay for what they did?

> Looks like it to me. Lock the poor little kid up for life and sell his family into slavery. Geez people give it a rest. If the kid did kill the snake I think its just a shame he didn’t get to carry it home with him and mount it on his wall. Ten year old killing a Python. A real trophy at that age.

Why don’t I come over to your house and tear up your lawn and garden? You seem to have no problem with people/kids having no respect for personal property, so this shouldn’t be an issue.

I agree. Something stinks about this story.

Hope dad is sued big time and kid is ordered into therapy.

Sounds like Dad made a successful escape.

A point I was going to make. What should have happened, the father should have stayed there with the child and accepted responsibility for what happened. What the child learned was, he killed the snake and could just walk away from the results of his actions.

One day at the train station this mother with little kids in tow walked by. Suddenly the little boy, just a toddler, rushed over a few feet and tried to stomp a pigeon. It escaped but it was a very close call. Everyone just continued walking like nothing happened. Unbelievable.

Yep, he is the same guy that put the explosives in the World Trade Center, shot Kennedy, and shot J. R.

Hmm..well, if you were a kid living next door to me and you touched one of my daughter’s pets (cat, dog) you’d be one sorry son of a bitch. And I ain’t PETA either.

I fervently hope they keep their little psychopath on the Ohio side of the river.

In response to reading the story, my 9 year old son said, "What a freak!"

Thought provoking post. Might very well be more truth than poetry to it.

Many people have a blind fear/hate of snakes and will kill or attempt to kill any snake they come across. I’ve seen grown men turn into raving hysterical nut-cases when confronted by a harmless snake in a confined space.

Unlike what some have said that kid was not normal. A 10 year old knows the difference between a wild snake and a pet snake. To deliberately and cold bloodedly kill someones pet, especially in their presence, is the act of a psychopath. I am astonished that anyone on this board would attempt to justify this behavior or consider it normal.

I’m no shrink but if someone has a blind fear/hate it is unlikely they would stomp on the animal. Run or freak out, yes. Go towards it and make contact, no.

My late father-in-law took my two young sons out to eat once and my boys got in a farting, giggling contest and embarrassed my f-i-l and that’s all he said to them, “That’s the last time I’ll ever take you anywhere”.

He didn’t tell me about it, I only heard about it after my boys were grown. I know and my boys know why I didn’t learn of it at the time. They both told me that they were scared that their grampa was going to tell me about it.

If you lived out in the country you would better understand what I said. Fear and hate make people do things that are irrational, running away is one, freezing in place is another and attacking the object of that fear/hate is also one.
