Absolutely agreed. It is the logical strategy in which to proceed and the way I see it and have always seen it. Knocking out Roe vs. Wade FIRST is essential, if we are to convince people of the necessity of a Constitutional Life Amendment.
"James Bopp -- an attorney who has represented antiabortion groups and a top Romney adviser on abortion -- said, "There's no flip-flopping. There's no contradiction. There's simply step one and step two."
Exactly right! : )
The criticism of Governor Romney's comments here, are outrageous, ridiculous and WRONG!
JCE says you’re trying to DUPE folks.

Is this true?
While I think Romney is an unprincipled flip-flopper, that headline is a serious distortion.
What a lying, distorted headline.
You have to go to the Indian press to get a smear ... what a joke.
Look at posts 5, 8, 17, 24, 30, among many others, for the RATIONAL side of the story.
Thankfully, we still have FReepers who think clearly and articulate well.
Mitt is too smart for the wing nut haters though, and it frustrates them.
Could you send me the whole story so I can send it on in email to some of Romneys biggists donors.
He professes to be a man of Faith? I wonder what God would have to say about that! You can't have it both ways, Mitt. You either follow the Lord, or you don't. Looks like you don't.
“Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Tuesday in an interview with Nevada television station KLAS said that if elected president he would allow individual states to keep abortion legal, the Washington Post reports.”
Once Roe v Wade is overturned, the issue goes back to the individual states. Other than nominating strict constructionist judges to the USSC, a President Romney would have no say over wether a state outlawed or kept the right to murder your unborn child. He would have no say over exceptions to those laws either.
I’m beginning to become convinced that that Romney’s run is less a presidential campaign than a Mormon evangelical exercise...
PING
Romney & Abortion [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
The Washington Post has Romneys supposed gaffe on its front page today, and I dont really understand why.
Heres what they’ve got this morning:
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney said this week that as president he would allow individual states to keep abortion legal, two weeks after telling a national television audience that he supports a constitutional amendment to ban the procedure nationwide.
In an interview with a Nevada television station on Tuesday, Romney said Roe. v. Wade should be abolished and vowed to “let states make their own decision in this regard.” On Aug. 6, he told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he supports a human life amendment to the Constitution that would protect the unborn.
“I do support the Republican platform, and I do support that being part of the Republican platform, and I’m pro-life,” Romney said in the ABC interview, broadcast days before his victory among conservative Iowa
The two very different statements reflect the challenge for Romney, who has reinvented himself as a champion of the antiabortion movement in recent years and is seeking to become the conservative alternative to former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.
I know its cool on all sides not to trust Romney, but this strikes me as no there there, despite the reporters contention otherwise. He supports a human life amendment but lives in the incremental real world. If Roe is overturned, states will take up the issue. If Roe is overturned, it would be helpful to have a president who supports a federal ban, and who will presumably support those trying to ban abortion in their states (something worth hearing him make clear he would). Romney’s position makes sense to me.
Sorry, no waffle.
A pro-life, pro-Romney friend on the Hill sends me this:
The piece this morning is a regurgitated hit piece. The same hit took place on August 6 when Mitt appeared on GMA. Romneys position is quite simple: Romney says, I am pro-life, I support a ban on all-abortions, but since that doesnt seem likely to pass, our immediate goal must be to overturn Roe V Wade and return the law to the states.
Here it is again from Brownback’s people on August 7.
Further, LIFENEWS reported on the same thing last week, siding with Mitt: Mitt Romney Backs Human Life Amendment, Overturning Abortion Case First Step. Doesn’t this show.... consistency?
Sorry, Mitt, but it's not up to the President.
