Jordan's King Abdallah calls for civil nuclear programme launch to be speeded up

King Abdallah II yesterday called on Jordan to accelerate the launch of a civil nuclear programme, with the aim of ending energy imports, according to a government statement.

'Energy is the main challenge for Jordan, and we have to think of radical long-term solutions,' the king told the supreme committee for nuclear energy strategy.

'It is important to accelerate the launch of the Jordanian nuclear programme,' he said, stressing the need to 'find alternative sources of energy with the goal of reducing Jordanian imports' in the sector.

Education Minister Khaled Tukan, who attended the meeting, said 'nuclear energy will comprise 30 pct of the total energy produced in Jordan by 2030'.

In April parliament passed a law allowing the use of nuclear energy to produce electricity and desalinate water.

Jordan wants to open its first nuclear power station by 2015.

The kingdom, which imports 95 pct of its energy needs, is one of the 10 poorest countries in terms of water, with a deficit of over 500 mln cubic metres per year, according to government estimates.

Surely the "Green solution" the UN promotes in Africa should be the direction Jordan should be urged to take as well, should it not?

Windmills and solar panels and couple car batteries for every household, and they can sell extra power, use it to charge up a neighbors cell phone, and make a few dinars on the side....A few chickens and goats and jordan could be a happening place, a model UN Utopia..

The UN needs to insist Jordan seek a green solution, or does that only allpy to Africa and the USA?

I’m not familiar with the UN’s stance on “green” energy sources in Africa, but I’d think Jordan would be limited by it’s small territory. After all, these green technologies are by-and-large relatively inefficient with low yields.

I will agree about how the UN pesters the U.S.
