Iraqi leaders announced an agreement Sunday to release thousands of prisoners and reform a law barring members of the Baath Party from government employment.

The agreement was announced following several days of meetings among Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, President Jalal Talabani, Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, Vice President Adel Abdul Mahdi and Massoud Barzani, president of the Kurdish region, The Washington Post reported.

I am furious.

They are releasing people who openly attacked American troops in combat and were captured.

WE are engaging in a public lynching of our troops for fighting back.

Excluding ex-Baath party members translates into exclusion of Sunnis. This is not going to go over well with the Sunnis. It’s like the Iraqi govt is going out of their way to stir up conflict that had been starting to die down

Round up the muzzie crazies for awhile. Feed and nurse their wounds then let them out to kill Americans again.
Political wars are not to be won.
This is B.S.

I would think reforming a law barring members of the Baath Party from government employment is a necessary step towards reconciliation.

That’s the part that they’re changing, according to the article?

My error, I mis-interpreted the article. So they’re going to amend the law so as to allow some ex-Baathists back into government jobs.

There is military progress and there is political progress. The military is doing a great job, OTOH, the Iraqi government kinda sucks.

I know that this is not PC, but I do not trust those rag heads as far as an 80 year-old woman could throw one. What bunch of a-holes!

Political wars are not to be won.

Being a hyper-power means never having an enemy try to meet you toe-to-toe.

Since 1975, this is the type war America will see.

The 'marketplace' of war is serving up some suckerpunches. And whether we win or lose this one, the military has learned a helluva lot about 'BS' 21st century 'wars' that they will have to fight, more than we knew before we started this exercise.

There's no amount of simulated training that could substitute.

Very much true.
But, if we had dropped 2000lb bombs on Al Sadr when we could have a few years ago his faction wouldn’t have grown to what it is now. BUT you had to worry about upsetting some folks. So our boys die.
That is b.s. politics. In war you kill and destroy, not play political b.s. like we have.

But it says they are reforming (i.e., repealing or limiting)that law, not passing the law. So it IS a reward to the Sunnis for turning against Al Qaeda.

Making AQ the common enemy, not the U.S.

The whole thing is dicey but probably necessary. Having said that, it would probably be helpful if Mr. Sadr could be reduced to a permanently horizontal position. He is the Mahdi glue. Remove him and that portion of the problem fragments, making it harder for Iran to cause problems.

Well, I think if we'd had the internet to quarterback D-Day, we'd have thought Omaha Beach was total BS, too.

As far as Al-whosit-today, I submit that the guy is a toothless idiot. I think we can agree on that.

Further, being a toothless idiot, and general purpose rabble-rousing cleric, he can be replaced by next-in-line pretty easily, and those morons will follow whomever they fightin 'da infidel'.

Remember we put two 500lb-ers on ol whatshisname...yeah, well, and then there was the other guy that replaced him.

Meanwhile, Sadr ran off to Iran in a panic before the surge of infidels, and from everything I read, that dwindled his following more than any amount of TNT.

We didn’t keep all the Nazis in jail... we handed over the country to a good number of em. They stopped giving us trouble and we had bases there. It’s called victory. What’s more important to you avenging EVERY death or winning the war?

In fact didn't Patton take a lot of grief for using the Nazis in the civil service positions they had formerly held?

The Sunni insurgency lead by ad-Douri (the King of Clubs) has decided to give up and turn against Al-Qaeda.

In exchange for joining the government / giving up, they wanted some of their members released and a type of clemency from prosecutions.

Testing the Sunni insurgents resolve to give up was carried out over the past several months where the Sunnis were supposed to take on Al Qaeda and drive them out of several cities and regions. From various reports, it sounds like this has worked.

So this is either the beginning of the end (Al-Qaeda is the last insurgency left) or it is a very big mistake (I tend to think you never cut a deal with terrorists to give up - you have to beat them into submission.)
