A Summer Chill

Have you noticed the silence about this year's hurricanes from Al Gore, Pontiff of The Holy Order of the Sky Is Falling? As last year's hurricane season began, the pontiff and his acolytes cheerfully predicted a series of devastating hurricanes. None came. So far this year it's been Dean, which put the east coast of Mexico awash, but without huge losses. Silence from THOOTSIF. No wonder.

Global warming measured over the last century ranges from one to two degrees Fahrenheit. Mr. Gore routinely preaches that it will get ever warmer and calamity will ensue. Since he contends that human beings are the cause of this, his remedy is to crank down industrial society. Alas, the weather is not cooperating with his theory.

Media had so much hope riding on hurricane Dean. They were all set for devastation, and global warming stories lined up for the weeks following. But it all fizzled along with hurricane Dean, and there aren’t any more hopeful signs in sight.

So much for the predicted, ‘worst hurricane year ever’ scare.
It’s been a cool August as well, which isn’t going to help the yearly averages. But, there’s still that big crack in the arctic ice shelf for them to look down into, and claim it’s the end of the world.

"It’s been a cool August as well".

That depends on where you live. Here in Louisville we've had record heat for over a month. We tied the record for most consecutive days of 90 or over (It was set 3 other times) and tied the all time record high of 105 degrees.

This is a normal thing which was last seen in the 1930's.

Here in Western Washington we have had only 11 days at or above normal since July 17th. It is the coolest Summer I can remember in my 48 years.
Normally you can pretty much count on the weekends to be dry in late July through August to plan camping or going to the Ocean, but this year we have had 13 days of measurable rain through July 17th to Aug 22.

We have been calling it the Summer That Never Wuz.

There has been five tropical storms so far this year.

The first two originated on the US south-east mainland (ie. intense low pressure systems), the third didn’t strengthen into a TS until just south of Nova Scotia (ie. non-tropical), the fourth was Hurricane Dean, and the fifth Erin, rotated backwards (clockwise) (ie. a collection of thunderstorms).

So here it is August 27 and there has only been 1 real tropical strom so far this year.

There is nothing happening at all in the Atlantic right now,
http://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/goeseastfullir.html

and sea surface temperatures are slightly below normal.

The Holy Order of the Sky Is Falling
. . . is the natural condition of a unified Big Journalism establishment. Journalism doesn't do anything, it only tries to attract attention and impress people with big talk. So naturally journalists will promote anyone who criticizes people who actually get things done. And the environmental movement is simply a reactionary criticism of the people who provide our SUVs and our gasoline. Hey, it's a lot easier than organizing efficient production of vehicles, or figuring out where there is oil . . .

"It is not the critic who counts . . . the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena - Theodore Roosevelt
The (il)logical conclusion of promoting criticism of anyone who does anything essential is to put critics - people who have zero track record of getting anything done - in charge of the economy. It's called "socialism" and, oddly enough </sarcasm>, it doesn't result in efficient production of anything but criticism and scapegoating.

Why Broadcast Journalism is
Unnecessary and Illegitimate

Most of Texas has seen the coolest and wettest summer in living memory. Many places, such as central Texas, have seen the wettest summer since records began being kept. I only just started watering my yard last week. That's unheard of in Dallas, where I usually turn on the sprinkler system in May.

Some scientists are expecting a climate cooling in about 10 years, based on sunspot cycles. I can't wait till Algore's movie is viewed as a joke and I pray that Mystery Science Theater 3000 will reform to add their comments to the movie.

You're doing a bit of celebrating on the 10-yard line by trying to make an issue of a "slow" hurricane season when we haven't even gotten to September, which is generally the peak month.

And all it takes is one or two hitting the US to make it a bad year - Andrew happened in an otherwise slow year.

I gotta AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS ONE!
Although I am truly thankful (of course) that we have not been hit with the devastating weather that some have experienced this summer.
But, from the perspective of a mom, this weather has STUNK!
Warming...I AM SO SURE...we have not had enough warm days in a row to warm up the tiny kiddie pool.
We left camping early because it was POURING ...
COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN...that’s pretty much my attitude about this “Summer”.
I told my son it was almost time for school to start....and his reply was something to the extent of, “We haven’t even had summer yet!”..
I had to agree..

In Dallas, I think it was Aug 15 or so before we got our first 100+ day.

As usual, temps vary. We're having a fairly good summer.  Next year, maybe we won't. Maybe we will. The GW chicken littles are just playing a scam on folks.

Its like Summer flip-flopped. Usually in Western WA you don’t want to plan camping until mid July, and then you are pretty safe until mid to late September. This year we had a very nice start with one of those rare perfect 10 4th of July’s, then on July 17th it all came to an end. When it did hit 80+ you cooled down at night, and within a few days you were back to below temps.

This has been by far the coolest summer in Oklahoma in my memory. We have had 40” of rain this summer....normal annual rainfall is 30”. The next 10 years will reveal what an absolute idiot Algore is........gonna be fun to watch!

EXACTLY!
My husband had 2 weeks off this year.
NEITHER of them would have been good for camping...
Late July and Late August!
Sheesh..

And the forecast for Labor Day Weekend?

What else would you expect....
After a nice mid week, a cold front moves in Thursday bringing a chance of drizzle Friday and Saturday morning. Sunday looks dry and late Monday there is a chance of showers later in the day. Highs will be near 70.
