The Dangers of 'Truth' In the Hands of Religious Warriors
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 27, 2007 | Alan Hurwitz

Posted on 08/27/2007 6:13:15 AM PDT by Dan Calabrese

The CNN series “Religious Warriors” and PBS presentation “City of Lights”, have focused attention on religious extremism in the complex political life of today’s world.

Fundamental questions remain – some funny, if the answers didn’t create such tragic consequences. On the holiday of Passover Jews ask Four Questions. I have four more to offer.

So, the author of this expects my religion to change so that it doesn’t offend anyone in the entire world? I find that offensive.

God never changes, he is what he is. It is stated in the Bible that it is better to be hot or cold - but never lukewarm. A politically correct religion is a tepid, room-temperature religion, just the thing that God abhors.

What a bunch of drivel!

This “Alan Hurwitz” attempts to identify “discrimination” as a cause of islamic terrorism, and even goes so far as to say that Americans have “trouble distinguishing religious scholars from religious fanatics.”

Hey Hurwitz, here’s a clue for you: the “religious fanatics” are the ones carrying bombs around, or rather, having children do their bomb-carrying for them.

Sheeesh; what a fool.

Can anyone imagine Jesus voting for Jerry Falwell or birds of similar feathering? Assuming they let poor outsiders with long hair vote.

I do get so tired of this elderly canard.

Jesus was not an "outsider" in Judaism. He was a Jew of Jews.

He was not particularly poor, as he had been a highly skilled artisan prior to taking up his ministry, and afterwards was supported by gifts from supporters.

His robe was the normal wear of Jews of his day, as were his long hair and beard.

Jesus disappeared into a crowd, he was not an oddly-dressed weirdo.

This guy is the typical “aging liberal hippie douche”. He trots his Jewishness out and wears it like a Star of David armband, but my guess is that’s all it is for him.

“Jesus was not an “outsider” in Judaism. He was a Jew of Jews.”

Amen!

“His robe was the normal wear of Jews of his day, as were his long hair and beard.” WRONG! However, I believe you are uneducated on this matter, not that you say it to perpetuate the falsehood.

It is a false depiction of my Lord, Jesus, as a long haired ‘hippy.’ Please visit

Kind regards,
TL

From Epiphanius of Salamis in his “Letter to the Emperor Theodosius” (written somewhere between A.D.379-395).

If then the Savior had long hair while his apostles were cropped, and since by not being cropped, He was unlike them in appearance, for what reason did the Pharisees and scribes give a fee of thirty silver pieces to Judas that he might kiss Him and show them that He was the one they looked for, when they might themselves or by means of others have determined by reason of His [long] hair Him whom they were seeking to find, and thereby without paying a fee?...

Frankly, I think Jesus would have liked Jerry falwell, and still does! Jerry was true to his calling. We may not have likes everything he said, or how he said it, but to state he was not a man of God is to just not understand what the Kingdom of God is all about. (such is the case in the leaders of my denomination)

You may be correct about the long hair part, although I’m sure there’s another side to the discussion. For instance, what’s the definition of “short.” Crewcut, modern business cut like Julius Caesar, shoulder length?

That Jesus wore a beard, perhaps well-trimmed, and robe is quite beyond dispute.

The point is that he was an ordinary-looking Jew, with nothing about his grooming or attire that was at all unusual. It was his message that was striking, not his appearance.

Yes, Falwell was a godly man. Ann Coulter had a column recently that talked about him and how the left recoiled at any of the truisms he pontificated upon.

“2.) Can President Bush not see the irony of his Sisiphisian mission to help Iraq create a secular-driven society, over which no one religion dominates, while obsessively promoting a Christian caliphate, (oops, I mean diocese) in these United States?”

(Similar fools make similar claims, that the Bush regime is a new Spanish Inquisition, but they rarely bother to provide any proof. Are they truly mad with Bush-hatred?)

3.) How do leaders of Islam, a great world religion over many centuries, permit its public face to be hijacked by a relatively small band of fanatics?

(Is it because the relatively small band of fanatics are the true leaders of Islam?)

You may be correct about the long hair part, although I’m sure there’s another side to the discussion. I found one site claiming that he wore his hair long, but since this site also claimed that Jesus’ brother James was a high priest of the Temple, they obviusly know little about the Bible. (Jesus and James were members of the tribe of Judah, not even Levites, much less priests.)

What’s the definition of “short?” Crewcut, modern business cut something like Julius Caesar, shoulder length?

The true point is that he was an ordinary-looking Jew of his day, with nothing about his grooming or attire that was at all unusual. It was his message that was striking, not his appearance.
