The terrorists are chortling
Ribbon rebuff revealing
By PAUL JACKSON
Our readers are pondering whether Mayor Dave Bronconnier and the aldermen who voted with him against 'Support our Troops' ribbons on city vehicles will have the audacity to wear poppies on their lapels on Remembrance Day.
Will we see a first rate exhibition of hypocrisy?
Yup, I'm afraid we will.
Blatant hypocrisy.
Sadly, to many citizens, this is what our city council has become.
Shameless, that's what they say.
We wear poppies to remember the fallen, the wounded and the men and women who gave their youth to save us during the First and Second World Wars.
Save us from maniacs who wanted to destroy our democratic ideals and take away our freedom.
And what are our men and women in uniform doing in Afghanistan?
Exactly the same.
Fighting to save us from maniacs who want to destroy our democratic ideals and take away our freedom.
Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has warned us -- boasted -- that Canada is one of the nations on his terrorist organization's hit list.
Just as the U.S. and other Western nations are.
So he wants to do to Toronto, or Montreal or Vancouver, or Calgary or Edmonton what he did to New York City, London, Madrid, Bali, and American embassies and military posts around the world.
It's frightening just to think about the potential devastation.
It will be even more frightening if bin Laden manages to pull it off.
So our forces, along with those of several other countries, are trying to stop al-Qaida from causing nightmarish carnage in our cities.
Wouldn't you think our mayor and his aldermen would want to show even a symbolic support of our soldiers?
Apparently not.
They use shaded words to excuse themselves from it.
Only aldermen Ric McIver, Andre Chabot, Barry Erskine and Ray Jones stood by our troops on this issue.
Some our of readers believe several aldermen have actually been bullied by Bronconnier into siding with him against their consciences.
If true, that hardly shows much strength of character or steadfastness.
But then I recall when the G8 leaders were about to meet in Kananaskis, I received an e-mail one Sunday from Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart asking me to help get the meeting moved out of Alberta.
She feared the terrorist threats.
Well, as Vladimir Lenin boasted: "The purpose of terrorism is to terrorize."
In a nutshell, to make us afraid to continue with the routine of our daily lives.
Colley-Urquhart wanted us to capitulate to the terrorist threats.
Remember that, Diane?
If we had, the terrorists would have won.
Today the terrorists, and their supporters in Canada, must be chortling over city council's decision against the yellow ribbons.
They will think they have won this one.
In a way, they have.
That is the bottom line.

That is sad. I am truly sorry for the brave Canadian troops, with this kind of betrayal at home.

There’s come real losers up there.
In the face of the behaviour of politicians are these facts:
A custom has arisen in which ordinary Canadians and local police and firefighters man every overpass along the highway between CFB Trenton and Toronto to honour fallen soldiers as the hearses taking them from Trenton to the Coroner's office in Toronto passed by.
When Toronto banned fire equipment from being stationed on the overpasses in the Toronto part of Hwy 401 and the Don Valley Parkway, the firefighters responded by parading in front of the two fire halls that the hearses pass between the highway and the coroner's office. Citizens responded by lining the streets between the highway and the coroner's office.
Toronto fire equipment had "support out troops" ribbons for about a year. City council ordered the ribbons removed but quickly reversed itself after the calls from angry Torontonians started coming in.
A custom has arisen across Canada to wear red on Friday as a sign of support for our troops. Rallies occur in parks and in front of the parliament buildings showing a sea of red. Last Friday there was a huge one at the Canadian National Exhibition. This despite the fact that every person wearing red at that rally had to pay admission to attend the rally.
Don't pity the troops. Instead, honour them for the steadfast professionals that they are.
Pity the pusillanimous politicians instead.
Point taken, and glad to hear it. But where do these politicians get the nerve, in the face of public support for the troops such as this, to be so treacherous? Not that we don’t have some of the same, it’s kind of rhetorical question.
Great pics. I support US, Canadian, British, and anyone’s troops who are fighting over there, regardless of what the liberals say! They are protecting our freedom, and deserve better than support stickers to be removed, or all-night debates trying to force them to surrender, or any of the nonsense that’s been thrown around. May God protect them and keep them safe.
Good for him!
Pictures of the 10,000 + Canadians that wore red at noon on Parliament Hill in support of our troops.
