Twin City Bank accepts Mexican ID| 29 Aug 2007 | 12:22 PM ET Font size: LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Twin City Bank only realized it had a language gap when the Mexican consulate in Little Rock opened in April.

Its ATM machines didn't offer services in Spanish and its brochures hadn't been translated. Perhaps worst, the company hadn't made any effort to reach Hispanic customers in Arkansas, a state with one of the fastest growing Spanish-speaking communities in the nation.

"We do want to serve all of our community," said Donna Hardcastle, the bank chain's senior vice president of retail. "We need to recognize this group and they need a little different attention than some of our other markets." Twin City Bank began accepting the matricula consular, an identification card issued by consulates to Mexicans living abroad. Twin City's decision puts the Pulaski County banking chain in line with its counterparts in Arkansas that accept the cards as a means to open bank accounts and transfer money to family members still living in Mexico.

The matricula consular cards include a photograph of the individual, a government seal and holographic image. Any Mexican citizen can receive one at a consulate by showing a birth certificate and other identifying documents their residency.

Consul Andres Chao said the consulate has issued 4,000 matricula consular cards and passports since it opened -- a nearly overwhelming response for his 10-member staff.

It has nothing to do with “Servicing the community”. It has everything to do with making money without regard to our laws and our country.

I have heard about some of these mortgage companies giving loans to illegals... why would they do that unless they had serious assurances no one would be deported..

Because only the borrower gets deported. The property used to secure the loan isn’t going anywhere...

Translation...We'll pander to the illegals to get their money too.

Oh!

We know someone that just moved there thinking they were escaping this open border madness.

Of course, this has nothing to do with recent housing market failures. There's a commercial running on tv of a hispanic woman with a distinct accent whining that it isn't her fault that she can't pay her mortgage. Excuse me, but who's fault is it? Not mine, but somewhere down the line I'm going to have to foot the bill. BTW, certainly nothing against hispanics but the feel from the commercial is that it's aimed at illegals.

yeah, but something tells me they wouldn’t be making those loans without hard assurances from somebody in gov’t there would not be a crackdown.

That's exactly what Mexico thought about Texas before 1836.

What if Pedro decides to save his pennies and buys a brand new pickup truck fully loaded and puts down 10%? He drives it across the border plated and insured only to hand it over to his little brother with the keys and claims it is stolen.

He gets a new truck, his brother gets a new truck, and we are stuck paying higher insurance costs because a stupid bank gave him the extra 30K he needed for it.

He pulls this twice, defaults on the loan and insurance and disappears with the truck in Mexico, where we all know it is so simple to get it repo'd back.

If I dealt with a bank that did this I would yank my money so fast and put it in a credit union their head would spin.
