School Bans Tag After Parents Complain

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A Colorado Springs elementary school is banning the game of tag on its playground -- after some children complained that they'd been chased or harassed against their will.

Assistant Principal Cindy Fesgen of the Discovery Canyon Campus school said running games will be allowed, as long as students don't chase each other.

Fesgen said two parents complained to her about the ban, but most parents and children didn't object.

Two elementary schools in the nearby Falcon School District did away with tag and similar games in 2005 in favor of alternatives with less physical contact. Officials at Evans and Meridian Ranch elementaries say that encouraged more students to play games, and helped reduce playground squabbles.

Colorado Springs schools are not alone. Schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., Spokane, Wash., and Attleboro, Mass., have banned tag at recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school not only banned tagged, but outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

Must be liberals. This is beyond stupid.

In about 7 days, the kids will all be playing tag again. This happened at a local elementary school. The kids gradually ignored the ban and I guess the teachers felt pretty foolish after a while and quit trying to enforce it.

But any principal who would ban tag *is* an ass.

Geez, tag was just ritual courtship. Boys purposely chased girls they liked, but were too ashamed to admit it and vice versa. I was the slowest person in the class (very well known) and was “it” about the same as everyone else. And yes, if a boy REALLY liked you it was pretty much harrassment.

You know what? I just had a Eureka moment. All that great and hilarious tag must be the reason for all of my failed relationships.

T.V. tag was my favorite.

After lunch we allow our students to go outside until the lunch period is over.

One of the games the kids created is a form of wall ball.

They take a tennis ball and throw it against one of the walls, as it bounces back they attempt to catch it.

If they go for it and miss, they have to face the wall, and the kid throwing the ball get a free shot at hitting the other in the back, with the tennis ball (they have to stand pretty far away when the throw it.

The kids don't whale it too hard cause they know they could be the next one facing the wall.

The kids love the game.

And another thing, I was a punny kid in 1970’s and we played dodgeball at recess all the time and I always got picked last, always got creamed, but loved every minute of it. It builds character and well I guess liberals dont like building character on the young ones.....

Back in the early '80s when I was in elementary school, we played a game called "Battle Ball" during PhyEd class.

Basically, you'd divide up into two teams, with each taking one side on a basketball court, with about 15-20 rubber kickballs, and then just "shoot" it out, much like dodge ball. It was rough and both guys and gals played, and we all had a good time, occasional bruises and bangs notwithstanding. I guess the game is no longer played now...

We played Dodge Ball, tag, Red Rover when I was a kid and loved it. Got rid of all that extra energy during recess! We didn’t have expensive games back in the 1950s! We played hide and seek too, is that next?

We had occasional broken arms, no big deal. We played rough. We weren’t raised as sissies. And I am a girl.

The stupidity of this is beyond belief!

BTW, YOU have a tagline consisting of events that are a source of pride to this native Texan.

A buddy of mine accidentally broke my left arm during an early morning game of 'tag' when I was in 6th grade. I felt the snap, but didn't think much of it until about three hours later when my arm didn't want to work anymore:)

My mom took me to the doc, I got a cast, went back to school the next day, threatened to beat my buddy with said cast, and then we went back to playing 'tag.' No big deal.

Times have changed.
