Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is a great read.

If you like one-dimensional characters whose only real purpose is to serve as props for an overlong speech disguised as a novel.

“A Perfect Spy” by John LeCarre.

Almost anything else by John LeCarre, at least his earlier works.

Captain from Castile, Samuel Shellabarger. And don't forget War and Peace and Moby Dick!

Thanks for the tip about The Virginian.

If you like Westerns done with a deft touch of humor, try:

Fraser, George MacDonald, Flash for Freedom!
Fraser, George MacDonald, Flashman and the Redskins
Fraser, George MacDonald, Flashman and the Angel of the Lord

Great stuff...

LOL. The best all time opening line of a children’s book. For those who don’t know what we are talking about, it’s the book of the Narnia series called “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

My favorite “fun stuff”

If you like Sci Fi with a sort of Dashiell Hammett bent, I’ve always loved the Amber novels by Roger Zelazny.

Interesting, descriptive stories (fascinating for those in the medical or animal field, also Anglophiles)- the James Herriot books.

The Lord of the Rings, and I’ve always had a weird fascination with the Nun’s Story, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, A Night to Remember (Titanic), and Mrs. Mike. They were all novels based strongly on interesting slices of real life.

Last of the Breed had simply the absolute best ending sentence of any book ever written. I can quote it form memory but won’t ruin it for the rest of the readers to this post.

I’m a fan of techno-thrillers like Clancy, Larry Bond and Stephen Coonts.

Vince Flynn also writes very good political CIA type books.

Have you read Cryptonomicon by Neil Stephenson? Deals with cyphers, modern and WWII, the evolution of computers, and Japanese war loot in the Phillipines.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert A. Heinlein.

I just started it. It'll be interesting to see if it lives up to its reputation.
