BRANDON, S.D. (AP) Mom's brownies and other homemade goodies have been banned from grade schools in the Brandon-Valley School District.
The ban is intended to protect kids who are allergic to nuts.
The "no shared treats" policy means no more suckers, cookies or even apples. And it means shared treats will not be allowed at Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's parties in grade-school classrooms.
School district officials say the ban will be strictly enforced.
Although the district no longer allows shared treats in elementary schools, students may bring their own snacks from home.
The ban does not apply to Brand Valley middle school and high school classes.
Nuts? The "nuts" are the people who imposed this ban.
How did we survive childhood?
We weren’t kids in the 00s, thankfully.
I don't remember any kid being allergic to peanut butter when I was a kid - or at least I don't remember hearing about schools banning it to cater to one kid.
*sigh*
And one more piece of my childhood dies.

Why not just say “no nuts” in the treats you send to school?

BANGOR, Maine —Bangor High School is going all out to keep peanuts off school property to protect a freshman student with a severe food allergy.
The cafeteria staff is ridding the kitchen and lunchroom of any traces of peanuts, peanut butter or other foods that might trigger a potentially fatal reaction in the unnamed student. School vending machines have been emptied of snacks with nuts, including granola bars and bags of peanuts.
The school last week sent a letter home to parents asking that they refrain from packing peanuts or other nuts or nut products in their children’s lunches. The letter also asked parents to make sure their children wash their faces and hands thoroughly before coming to school if they’ve had contact with nuts in the morning.
“We’re taking every precaution we can,” Principal Norris Nickerson said.
Student allergies to peanuts and other foods have affected schools in many Maine communities in recent years.
Public schools are required by law to make “reasonable accommodations and adjustments” for all students, according to Murray Shulman, director of pupil services for the city of Bangor.
While some people may question the need to adhere to ban on peanuts, Shulman said, “the vast majority of parents understand that (allergies) are life-threatening circumstances, and they cooperate.”

Why not let those who have the allergy take personal responsibility for their own safety?
This is getting the “village” to protect a person from making a bad choice, and thereby relieving them of personal responsibility.
The mindset of those on the board is truly scary.

I prefer, “No nuts allowed in schools!”...oh...nevermind. Thanks to the administration that would never work.
By what...not attending school? While not speaking to the specifics of this situation, peanut allergies are probably the most serious type of allergy and can be fatal. A reaction can be triggered by simply inhaling peanut dust or even touching someone who has handled nuts.
I recognize that these people are exposed on a daily basis, but it is especially problematic at elementary schools, where children are often in very close contact with others. Seriously, what would you have a person do who has a serious peanut allergy? Come to school in a bubble?
These parents learned all about the “village” and how great it is at.... the public school. The school system itself is socialist. That is where all this nonsense comes from. These parents have learned their lessons well. Until this socialist edifice is rejected by the people of this country, things will not change.
By... not... eating... food... laden... with... nuts.
Is it really that difficult a conept to understand? Is it that traumatic for one child to monitor his own intake that thousands of others must be denied simple pleasures in life?
You know, there are high school nerds out there who aren't getting any sex. Maybe we should make it illegal for anyone under 25 to have sex so that they do not feel left out.

I’m evening things out. I’m taking two dozen vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, dipped in coconut or nuts into work today.
It’s true for now; Grown Ups really CAN eat whatever they want versus kids who are under the thumb of their parents and the socialists at school!
When cupcakes are outlawed, only Outlaws will bake cupcakes! :)
You know.....I don’t know what happened to this country’s population because you’re right....all of a sudden half the country’s allergic to nuts...go to hell.
I mean nuts are the first foodstuffs. Most all animals eat nuts.
Way I figger, humans allergic to nuts are candidates for Darwin’s law. Come on......nuts make your bowels move, they are the most prevalent food on the planet.....
Nuts. Man I love nuts. My favorite are walnuts. Love pecans. Macadamia right up there.
Peanuts...not so much. But they really legumes and like cashews, I’m not so much into crunchy legumes. Plus peanuts remind me too much of Jimmy Carter.
I just can’t understand your thinking.
What you want to do is turn the world upside down for the sake of one child.
I KNOW people with peanut allergies. They take care of themselves just fine. The scenario you paint is extremely extreme and a complete red herring.
If I know I have an ailment, I take care of myself. I don’t demand that everyone else be put through a wringer for my sake.
This nonsense of re-arranging the whole environment to satisfy the whining of ONE KID is stupidity in the purest form.
