Jury Wants DNA, Hair Sample in USF Case [Goose Creek Pipe Bomb incident]

TAMPA - A federal grand jury in Tampa is asking for DNA and hair samples from a University of South Florida student jailed four weeks ago in South Carolina on explosives charges, his attorney said.

Andrew Savage said in a phone interview Wednesday night that he had no indication why the samples were being sought from his client, Youssef Megahed.

*snip*

...Megahed and Mohamed[,] were pulled over for speeding in South Carolina on Aug. 4 about seven miles from the Goose Creek Naval Weapons Station, which houses a military prison for enemy combatants.

The men were charged with possession of an incendiary or explosive device, based in part on items found in the trunk of their car, authorities said. Mohamed said they were carrying fireworks.

DNA samples are only useful when you've got something to match them to. This suggests evidence in hand from a location where Megahed has denied being present or some other circumstance where Megahed molecules shouldn't be turning up.

Anyone know anything about this attorney? Sounds like he’s going to be up a lot of late nights over this one unless he’s a hot shot hired by AQ.

Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations..."the best way to bring resolution to this is to present the evidence that was seized in that trunk. … Evidence does not lie." but Muslims may lie to the Infidels!

“Bedier declined to answer questions about his testimony, saying he wanted to check with the national headquarters of CAIR about what he was allowed to say.”

Question for the legal eagles.

What right does a jury have to request evidence or testing?
Can a grand jury demand evidence?
Can a trial jury demand evidence?

Ooooh, I suspected as much. How likely is it two innocent students out riding around who happen to have a couple fireworks in their trunk have the means to rush out and hire this guy? Verrry interesting indeed.

IIRC, there was a lawyer named "Andrew Savage" on a 'Survivor' series a few years back, Pearl Islands I think. He was from Chicago, I believe.
