UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - United Nations officials found vials of dangerous chemicals, which had been removed from Iraq a decade ago, in a U.N. building in New York, but U.N. officials said on Thursday there was no danger.
The FBI was called in to help remove the substances.
The material was phosgene, a chemical warfare agent, U.N. spokeswoman Marie Okabe told a news conference.
The inspections unit said in a statement that the chemicals had been found last Friday.
The Iraqi weapons inspectors came across the material as they were closing their offices, which are housed in a building near the U.N. headquarters in Manhattan, said Ewen Buchanan, a spokesman for the inspectors.
Phosgene was used extensively during World War I as a choking agent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
Memo to weapons inspectors: everyone clean your offices, and keep an eye out for any spare chemical agents.
Took ‘em 10 years to find WMD at the UN, eh?
The irony: while Colin Powell was putting on the slide show in the UN showing suspected WMD sites in Iraq, some of the stuff was only a few hundred feet away.
Oh the irony!
Lousy housekeeping??? is there any doubt that this institution should be removed from the U.S.,,,,
I vote that the new UN HQ be built in the Iraqi Green Zone... that will fix em.
“Oh, Hans Brix. How nice to see you.”
The real questions are: how much of the stuff, and what earthly reason could the Iraqis possibly have for keeping it in NYC. Especially since all the really smart people insist that Iraq had nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism — that was just another Bush lie. /sarc
Thank goodness this dangerous material was lost in the UN inspections unit offices. Otherwise, it might never have been found. So many offices, so little time.
Were they in Scott Ritter’s office?
Oh, Hans Brix. How nice to see you. Thanks for making me smile.
Hans ... you're really breaking my .... here Hans!
No big deal. According to the NY Times, the WMDs found in Iraq were old and degraded so nothing to worry about.
I am sure they can just pour those down the drain in the UN bathroom.
Probably just used around the office for practical jokes. “Hey, Machmoud, try the Sanka!” HAHAHAHAHA! It has a choking agent in it!
re: Scott Ritter, I wondered the same thing.
LOL!
That’s funny.
Iraq WMDs found in US. There’s a headline for you! The only headline that would top that would be if the chemicals were found at the DNC.
Probably they’ve discovered the secret network used for weapons proliferation....
Iran wants to share nuke secrets with North Korea? Just put them in the U.N. diplomatic pouch and route them through New York!
( I wish I could add < /sarcasm >, but I’m not kidding!)
“C’mon Hans, you’re bustin’ my ____ here.”
GOOD POINT, one the MSM will undoubtedly overlook!!
