It's official: Fred Thompson will make a Presidential announcement today at 4:30pm.
For all who have waited for this for months -- here you go.
He's finally putting his money where his mouth is. Word is that he is making phone calls to supporters as we speak.

Sources: Thompson to announce Sept. 6th
Fred Thompson's campaign-in-waiting will hold a 4 p.m. conference call today with supporters to brief them on plans for the former Tennessee senator's presidential announcement next week, according to an e-mail obtained by Politico.com.
Randy Enwright, Thompson's political director, said in the message that they will "discuss the next steps as we move forward as an organization." A Thompson aide confirms that they'll share the news about the long-awaited formal launch. "By the end of the day, we'll have more clarity," the aide said, declining to reveal which day the announcement would take place.
UPDATE: Still no official confirmation from the campaign, but Thompson sources now confirm that he will announce his candidacy next Thursday, Sept. 6. The launch will include a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida. As expected, Thompson will not appear at the GOP debate in New Hampshire on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
A Thompson campaign official says that they'll issue a paper statement as to their plans later this afternoon.

September 6th!
Thailand?
Kind of a strange non-event announcement after all this time. Why today?
we have 3 viable pubs....Mitt, Fred, and Rudy....
I can't see Mitt getting anywhere, Rudy seems to have a lot of baggage, but Fred....Fred has got Potential...
Everyone takes off for vacation in late summer. So I would expect the announcement shortly after Labor Day.
That’s what I suggested late last spring. You’d have to be crazy to announce during the summer. Nobody’s paying attention.
At most, this will be a call to insiders confirming that he will announce next week.
Fred has managed to milk every once of momentum out of his “campaign” this summer.
What a painful spectacle this has been. Let’s just hope he runs his real campaign with more purpose and enthusiasm.
If he does announce, I hope he doesn’t just go around the country reading from the Federalist papers.
Though critical to the way our government should work, he needs to fire up the rhetoric on some big conservative ideas —
— Win the war on terror at all costs (the PC days are over)
— Lower taxes (rally the country to eliminate the IRS)
— Shrink govt. (talk specifics about outright shutting down agencies and programs)
— Shut down the borders. Step up deportations. English only.
— Protect life.
If all he does is talk theory, I’m sticking with Hunter or Tancredo through the primary.
Don’t mean to bust your “cherry” but, FDT will be our candidate.
The first real deal in 30 yrs.
He had contractual obligations and obligations to his co-workers at L&O who would have lost royalties if he announced earlier. The last run of L&O is scheduled for Sep 1st, so announcing earlier would violate FCC regulations. He’s not playing games, he is serious...it is the naysayers who need to get a grip.
LOS ANGELES - If Fred Thompson makes it official and throws his hat in the ring for President, NBC will pull future reruns of "Law & Order" featuring the actor after Sept. 1, executive producer Dick Wolf said yesterday.Wolf, reading from an official NBC statement yesterday, said the rule applies when a person legally qualifies as a candidate.
"If Fred Thompson formally declares his intention to run for President, NBC will not schedule any further repeats of 'Law & Order' featuring Mr. Thompson beyond those already scheduled, which conclude on Saturday, Sept. 1," Wolf said. Wolf assured that NBC would take all "appropriate steps consistent with FCC regulations." Thompson fans would, however, be able to see him in reruns airing on TNT.
He can't declare until after Sep 1st or he violates FCC regulations, it is that simple. His costars get royalties on those reruns, so he had to take them into consideration.
