BitDefender tests show strong results

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Germany-based AV-Test has announced a recent independent analysis of BitDefender's antivirus engine found almost 100 percent of malware was detected.

California-based BitDefender is a global antivirus software and data security solutions provider.

In the test by AV-Test, a business-information workgroup at the Institute of Technical and Business Information Systems at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, BitDefender's patent-pending B-HAVE antivirus engine detected 99.51 percent of the malware.

“We are very pleased with the results of this test and will strive to continue leading the pack among top antivirus vendors,” said Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender’s chief technology officer, in a statement. “AV-Test’s results demonstrate BitDefender’s ongoing commitment to providing home and SMB users with solutions that offer the absolute highest levels of malware protection.”

Measuring the capabilities of 29 competing single and multi-engine antivirus solutions the AV-Test, which was performed earlier this month, analyzed the security software on the ability to detect nearly 1 million different pieces of malware using the most up-to-date signatures.

AT-Test officials say validated samples of malware found in the wild and collected by AV-Test in the past six months were the only samples used in the testing process.

100?% That's a record for an anti-virus software product.

I have been using Bit Defender for about six months and I like it.

Very reasonably priced, and very effective.

Detected yes, but did it clean it? I've seen plenty of various protection software detect plenty but completely ineffective at cleaning it off.

Got the “blue screen of death” due to a BitDefender file... Only way I got rid of it was to the software... Not bashing BitDefender, just my experience...

Looking for a free AV. Anyone have any ideas. Considering AVG. I have MCafee on my laptop, getting ready to expire. Tired of paying for it.

My son uses a Russian AV, but can’t recall the name.

AVG is good stuff, though I recommend you also install AVG AntiSpyware too- It is the old Ewido Trojan tool. While the AVG AV is pretty good and runs all the time, the free AVGAS will run in the background for 30 days, then become on-demand only (unless you buy it). Use it on-demand thereafter every couple weeks or so to beef up your protection.

My son uses a Russian AV, but can’t recall the name.

That will probably be "Kaspersky" which is the best there is.

Avast! or AVG. The most recent AV test I read had them both in the top 10, with the difference between them (in detection) being only 1/10th of one percent. I use Avast!.

I started using AVG (free home) about 3 years ago when McAfee and a couple of other name brands got to be glut-ware.

I have been completely happy with AVG.

I also use some spyware that I run periodically. I liked Ad-Aware (free home), but I don’t like their new version. The new free home version doesn’t allow me to set preferences, and they added a bunch of stuff to the program. I have been testing out Avorax and Spyware Terminator.
