Polish MEPs want Palestinian EU conference cancelled

Wednesday, August 29. 2007

A cross party consensus of MEPs from Poland have come out against a conference on the rights of Palestinians to be held in the European Parliament. The conference, scheduled for 30 and 31 August, is being organised by the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian Nation.

Israel has been making attempts to block the conference as it believes it will have an anti-Israeli character.

The conference agenda includes a workshop on ‘the strengthening of the campaign against occupation, including a campaign against the wall [around the West Bank] which is dividing Israel from Palestinians.’

Last week Boguslaw Sonik, of the Civic Platform party, sent a letter to the head of the EU Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering, where he wrote:

"The conference agenda does not facilitate dialogue and consensus. On the contrary, it will lead to an escalation of already tense relations between the two nations". Other Polish MEPs to support the call for the conference to be called off are Bronislaw Geremek (Democratic Party), Konrad Szymański (Law and Justice) Ryszard Czarnecki (independent) and deputy head of the European Parliament, Marek Siwiec (Democratic Left).

"UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian Nation."... including ..." a workshop on ‘the strengthening of the campaign against occupation, including a campaign against the wall which is dividing Israel from Palestinians."

Do you really have to read any further?
