Every Chinese-owned shop in the city was barricaded to avoid being looted. Meanwhile, shops owned by whites or Asians carried on trading without incident.

This may seem a bit confusing to some, but in Africa and Britain, 'Asian' is the term used to refer to someone from the Indian Subcontinent.

Okay, my guess... is they missed out on the whole slaver thing during the 1500s-1800s and want to make up for it.

America and the Western powers have already snapped up the world's largest oil reserves. Saudi Arabia and Iraq - with 45 per cent of the world's oil between them - are in effect closed to China.

Don't worry, China. If the Democrats win the White House in November of 2008, they will abandon that 45 per cent of the world's oil.

I wish someone in the media with a better memory than me would start including that China was very aggressively pursuing this in the 50s.

"Like all empires, China's economic domain in Africa is stirring deep resentment."

Like all empires? What nonsense! This reminds me of the scene from "The Life of Brian", where the Judean revolutionaries complain about the Roman Empire.

Africa pinglist.

The Chinese are following the resources.

And they aren't the only ones.

This article reads like one big hyperbole from rehashed news at least a year old. It also has the sincererity of a convicted ex-con complaining about the new thief on the street.

Colonialism requires a loss of political sovereignty of the colony to the coloniser. What China is doing is not colonialism, but economic exploitation.

And everyone seems to quote that Sata guy.

Same reason the British and Euros did: Because that’s where the resources are.

Quote from article: "Like all empires, China's economic domain in Africa is stirring deep resentment. The wonder is that it has happened so quickly, and where the scramble will end."

I would think being forced to surrender or suffer annihilation as the British imposed once would stir resentment instanteously.

By the time the ChiComs are through with them the Africans will be begging the European colonial powers to return.

Generally, the Chinese have zero morality when it comes to black people. They are much more racist than whites and have no political correctness to restrain them

Beijing must find more raw materials and new markets for manufactured goods

You can't sell to people who have no money and who are barely existing.
