Tampa USF student dies of meningitis
THE TAMPA TRIBUNE
TAMPA -- A University of South Florida student diagnosed with bacterial meningitis has died, a school spokesman confirmed this afternoon.
Rachel Futterman, a 19-year-old member of the Delta Gamma sorority, became ill Friday and went to the hospital Saturday, where she later was placed on life support.
The university's Student Health Services and the Hillsborough County Health Department identified about 40 people who might have had contact with her, said Egilda Terenzi, director of USF health services.
About 60 students had been vaccinated by midday in an effort initiated by the university to avoid any spread of the disease.
