Edwards backs mandatory preventive care

TIPTON, Iowa - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said on Sunday that his universal health care proposal would require that Americans go to the doctor for preventive care.

"It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK."

He noted, for example, that women would be required to have regular mammograms in an effort to find and treat "the first trace of problem." Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, announced earlier this year that her breast cancer had returned and spread.

Edwards said his mandatory health care plan would cover preventive, chronic and long-term health care. The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans.

"The whole idea is a continuum of care, basically from birth to death," he said.

The former North Carolina senator said all presidential candidates talking about health care "ought to be asked one question: Does your plan cover every single American?"

"Because if it doesn't they should be made to explain what child, what woman, what man in America is not worthy of health care," he said. "Because in my view, everybody is worth health care."

Edwards said his plan would cost up to $120 billion a year, a cost he proposes covering by ending President Bush's tax cuts to people who make more than $200,000 per year.

Edwards, who has been criticized by some for calling on Americans to be willing to give up their SUVs while driving one, acknowledged Sunday that he owns a Ford Escape hybrid SUV, purchased within the year, and a Chrysler Pacificia, which he said he has had for years.

"I think all of us have to move, have to make progress," he said. "I'm not holyier-than-thou about this. ... I'm like a lot of Americans, I see how serious this issue is and I want to address it myself and I want to help lead the nation in the right direction."

He said he would not buy another SUV in the future.

The Ford Escape, the first hybrid SUV on the market, gets an estimated 36 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons...”

I guess attorney Edwards has never heard of the Fourth Amendment. I also guess there will be no opting out of the system for those who would like to make medical choices for themselves instead of according to a schedule dictated by some bureaucrat. Hillary’s plan didn’t allow opting out either. Under her vision of socialist utopia, doctors who treated people outside the system were subject to time behind bars, IIRC.

Why anybody in their right mind would vote for these socialist yahoos is beyond me.

I'd imagine you'd forfeit coverage if you missed your regular mandatory exams. Or, on more on par with current trends, you'd have hefty financial penalties for missing gropings.

What do you get with mandatory, periodic, health exams combined with Electronic Medical Records (EMR), which will naturally give bureaucrats the ability to scan and score each citizen?

Sounds a lot like the recipe for complete control of the population, like was started in Nazi Germany and was tuned into an art form in the Worker’s Paradise of Stalin’s USSR, and under Mao, where even today young women in factories have their monthly cycle monitored in order to find unauthorized pregnancies.

The key to preventing abuses of privacy that lead to more tyranny is to prevent government from having the means and mechanisms to invade privacy in the first place. Having “strong laws” is not enough, and did not for example, prevent Nixon from abusing the IRS, or prevented Clinton from having hundreds of protected FBI files.

Part of the mechanism that sets the ground work for universal health care monitoring by a faceless and uncontrollable bureaucracy will be the EMR system. EMR is a wide gateway to tyranny, IMO.

People who cheer on the Edwards plan are either useful idiots, or have no real understanding of liberty and the path Edwards is trying to take the nation.

And after we force you to do that, we will decide what you eat and drink, how much sleep you get, and when, and you will be forced to exercise 20 hours a week.

Let’s see . .we can’t force people to work, quit addictions like drugs, tobacco, alcohol, go to school, drive the speed limit . . .

So how are we going to force people to go to the doctor, Johnny? Especially the gadzillions of illegals you so love and protect?

Gollly! This solves EVERYTHING!

Will your “health” plan cover $1200 haircuts too?

I want to know because I paid $15 for my last one and it wasn’t very good.
