Question for the experts:
Does anyone know why the guys in the picture are wearing that type of helmet: looks like a skydiver’s helmet more than a combat helmet. I can see that they are chopper-borne, but I don’t understand the choice of helmet.
As you've already noted, it's not your typical GI issue kevlar assault helmet. The reason these guys use it is because of the close-quarters nature of their operations, similar if you will to a hockey game. The standard, clunkier kevlar helmets are generally for protracted outdoor use in open field environments. The more compact helmet however gives its wearer greater visibility, doesn't get in the way in close quarters combat, and also protects against falling and flying debris inside buildings and other tight places.

I can see now one further advantage: if you are jumping out of a plane or heli, the snug fitting helmet will not catch wind and pull your head off. Got it.
